    I bought this because I love the type of ice it makes. When it is at its prime the ice production is fabulous and quick. However, if our when the machine malfunctions it makes a squealing noise that is annoying to say the least. For the price you pay you'd expect for the machine to work for the long haul. The price point is on par with that of a deep freezer basic fridge. I need more bang for my buck. It is absolutely beautiful though.

    LOAD pain in the rear!!

    Nope! For the price I expected better quality. Started making the most unbearable noise within 3 days. I mean screaming at us from the kitchen. I looked it up on YouTube and eventually everyone who owns it runs into this problem. Had to return it.

    This is 2nd Opal 2.0 ice maker after my first one died in less than a year. Thank goodness BESTBUY let me exchange it at the store. Don't get me wrong, i would not have gotten another one if i didn't like it. The Opal is probably the best counter top portable ice maker around, but saying this, they are not great by any means, not yet anyway. The design is beautiful, looks really nice on the counter top. It makes soft pellet ice fairly quickly. The downside is that it does need to be cleaned quite often, probably every 2 weeks, because it does get nasty pretty quick. Also, when the machine goes into defrosting mode, the machine starts to scream and can get very, very loud. If you do a cleaning, this will normality quiet the machine down. It's not difficult to clean, but it's not that easy either. It gets easier to do the more you do it.

    Had to take the first one back because it stopped making ice and the read out said “add water” even though it was full of water. The machine made a lot of loud strange noises. I guess if the second one we get makes the same noises , I’d say to folks don’t buy unless you have another room to keep it in when in use. Definitely too large for kitchen counter or small bar area. I keep mine in laundry room. As far as the ice it produces, it is great!!! It is totally addictive and I found myself everyday using the ice machine over refrigerator ice…. If this second one we get stops working, I guess we will return to Best Buy and call it quits….

    Makes great ice. Relatively noisy. After two weeks of use, started getting an error - Add Water. Although the water tank was full, this error persisted. Online searches show purchasers dismantling their unit to correct. We removed the official, relatively expensive GE recommended compatible water filter that we installed, and replaced it with the strainer that comes with the unit. Seems to work ok now - hoping it stays that way. Intentionally, we did not purchase a cheap after market filter and as such did not expect any issues. Maybe we got a bad filter? Pretty disappointing though, this pellet ice machine is an expensive unit.

    Works well. Haven’t used the web available toner yet. Right now it’s in our wet bar in the TV room and is a little noisy to watch. Quiet TV shows next to it. We recommend putting in a noisy location like a kitchen or behind the door.

    It is loud and makes an awful rumbling noise. Ive had it for a little over a year, coincidentally when the warrenty expires, and it just crapped out completely. GE wants to charge me $120 just for them to come out and look at it, not including whatever they have to do to it. Do not buy this.

    I have given this produce 5 stars before as when it works it's great! However my latest experience has been two units that both began to get mechanically VERY NOISY just after a week of use...and both were returned/exchanged.

    Ive had ice machine for 6 months and its gradually gotten A LOT louder. Soemfjmes it has weird noises as well. The ice is great , but its very loud.

    Unit is constantly making squealing noises, so bad you have to unplug it. Then it works for a few days before it starts the cycle all over again. There is something not right for the super high cost. The ice is great but the process is annoying. Will probably have to exchange it soon and see if a new one acts any better.

    A real noise maker

    I have had this ice maker for just over a month. It has been cleaned and descaled as per the instructions. I use the recommended distilled water for making ice. At about the 3 week mark it started to make a slight grinding noise. Fast forward and now it sounds like metal on metal screeching that is loud and irritating. I have descaled and cleaned until I am sick of it. Beginning to regret this purchase. Hopefully GE will make this right.

    Great machine and great ice. Made god awful noise a couple days in like it was going to explode finally quit with the load gear grinding noise and get a loud noisy hum like the side panel is vibrating. Love this ice Machine for past year! Works great when working. Purchased and put in Service at the beginning of last year and now it keeps kicking out and going into defrost mode. Ran clean cycle and still no resolution so far. Only use bottled deerpark spring water. Clean frequently. This expensive machine should last and be trouble free for longer than a year-year and a half. Called customer support at 7:40pm. On hold for 20 mins no answer. They close at 8. Any suggestions or help? Would be a 5 star prefect review if it was problem free and support was available

      If the ice maker is going into defrost mode too often, it's highly likely that the air vents are blocked. Make sure there is a minimum of 3" clearance on the back and sides of the unit to ensure proper airflow. Check to ensure that the side tank is not blocking either of these vents. It should be pulled forward, in line with the front of the ice maker. If this doesn't help, calling our Opal Support team can provide the best assistance moving forward.     After 3 years of constant problems...

    I reeeaaally wanted to love this ice maker. After 3 years of buying TWO units back to back (first unit broke) I just can't recommend this unit. Constantly trouble shooting, weird grinding noises, not making ice, unit overheating, constantly cleanings, etc. It's just not worth the headache anymore. Moving on to a different brand!

    Very bad product good concept

    Do not buy. I have gone through at least seven of these machines. When the first one broke they send me a refurb. After that they said they were going to send me new ones which were not the case. Each machine would last maybe a week or two without screaming like a banshee. Some right out of the box would start making noise do not buy this product. The last machine I put in a box put on my front porch and try to have them pick it up because I was tired of driving to the UPS place and doing it myself

    Before it started making a horrific squealing noise it was amazing. about a year or so of use, it squeals horribly. i have tried multiple cleanings and i have to take it apart to try to fix it.
