Absolutely love my Microsoft surface. I’m an Apple girl, but Apple won’t support what I’m doing in nursing school. This laptop is similar to the Mac but it’s not Apple. I’ve been doing all my work perfectly fine and it’s amazing

I had the 2 generation laptop for 3 years before upgrading to the 4th generation. There are not many differences, however, I do notice that this laptop closes down Microsoft applications (e.g., Word, Excel, etc) occasionally when I try and open other documents from the File Explorer or from recent history from Microsoft applications. It appears to crash and happens daily if not multiple times per day. The trackpad is also much more sensitive or occasionally glitches moving the mouse 1 to 2 inches from where I am clicking. Looking into if attaching an external mouse fixes this issue.

The Surface Laptop 5 is the first Windows based surface machine in a bit. I had the OG Surface Pro 2 tablet and had kept an eye on the devices but had upgraded away for some time. I was looking for something to work on but also use for light gaming while away from home. Out of the box, the Surface Laptop has a charger and some documentation. The laptop is really thin and light weight, with the thickness you do not get much in terms of IO, you have a USB-A, USB-C, 3.5mm headphone jack, and a charge port, which is a proprietary connector. The charger itself does have a USB-A port on it which allows you to plug one more thing it, I typically use this for charging my phone instead of using the port on the laptop itself. The laptop itself has a really good build quality not a ton of flex on the keyboard itself when you apply force, so normal use it feels very solid. Nice layout to the keyboard, very comfortable, and they are little chiclet style keyboard so they do not make a ton of noise when typing. The Keyboard is backlit and has 3 settings. You got a fairly good sized touch pad, you can single press to click anywhere, press with two fingers anywhere to right click or swipe with two fingers for scrolling, there may be more gestures but still playing with it. It does however seem to attached at the top close to the space bar as you can not click at the top, the bottom left of the touchpad does left click and bottom right does right click, so you can do that they just aren't physical buttons. The screen is really nice! The display itself looks great and is very responsive to touch, it does have multi-touch so you can pinch to zoom. Everything I have thrown at it so far has looked clean, nothing looked off in terms of colors or sharpness. Working on documents, playing some games and even jumping on Teams calls have all been a pleasure with this screen. The Surface has Windows 11 preinstalled, which I have been using a bit at home on my desktop. The OS is clean, visually different from 10, but everything I used in Windows 10 has been compatible with Win11 so I like it, just takes a little getting used to in terms of start button placement and not being able to click anywhere on the taskbar to bring up the task manager. I like how easy Win11 allows you to snap applications/browsers to different placements by hovering over the window maximize button at the top of a window. The battery lasts well enough, I can get through several hours of work without needing to reach for the charger. I do have the tendency to plug it in when I walk away from the machine so it always has the juice. I did some light gaming as, a little test, first playing a game installed on the drive which was Cuphead (Since there isn't much in terms of dedicated graphics). The game ran great, no stutter no issues, and for something like Cuphead you definitely need it to be responsive. I tried running Destiny 2 for fun, but understandably did not run at all, totally understandable with the minimal graphic processing this has. You need a game that relies on the CPU, since that is where most of the power is (The i5 is great!). I then moved on to the XBOX app for a little cloud gaming, with my Gamepass Ultimate sub (Which I was given a free month with this laptop, the app prompted me to redeem) I jumped into some Forza Horizon 4, for a machine like this Streaming is an amazing option for playing some serious games without hauling around a much bulkier machine. I played between the two games for 2 and a half hours, and ran the machine down to 40% while unplugged from power. I was using Bluetooth for the controller and had my headphones plugged in via USB. Audio for calls and watching videos is great, it gets surprisingly loud, but is a bit uncomfortable to listen to at that volume (haha) so I actually keep it really low when watching training videos or YouTube. Music isn't bad, but I really keep that at low volume, but a good Bluetooth headphones or the 3.5mm jack is a way better option in my opinion. Charging is the main thing that is odd to me, the included charger is 65w but using a 65w USB-C charger or even a 130w charger it says it's slow charging and to use the charger included with the laptop. I feel that isn't true though, I can use the USB-C with no issues, it charges faster than I can consume the power. Options are nice, it's just too bad it guides you away from it, not sure why though. Probably a reason, maybe not. Other negative is lack of ports, it does have a Thunderbolt 4 port, so I use my USB-C hub to give me a little more, it's just one more thing to carry. Overall I am really happy with the laptop, it works with everything I was looking for and gets by a little more than I would have thought with the Iris Xe Graphics. I am really looking forward to traveling with this Surface Laptop 5 a little more with as light as this thing is!

Why haven't you kept up with the times?

***TLDR:*** Microsoft hasn't kept up with the times. While the Laptop 5 gives you a premium exterior appearance, port selection is horrible, the screen is dated, bezel size is huge, and storage is hard to upgrade. Performance also unacceptably suffers when using the most efficient power setting. ***BUILD QUALITY:*** The build quality is good, though aluminium with hard edges (like found here) is prone to chipping and denting. The Laptop 5 is sturdy, though. The included charger is high quality, though proprietary. Keys are clearly plastic on this model, though better feeling (more grip) than the pink unit on display at the store. ***STANDOUT FEATURES:*** 1.) The "Sage" color is a nice addition to the Surface Laptop lineup. 2.) The USB C port can be used to charge the laptop. 3.) Top row shortcuts were well thought out. Switching to Function keys is also simple, with just the push of a single key. ***TYPING:*** The typing experience is par for the course, given the market segment. Most thin and light laptops have short key travel and a decent initial spring. This is no exception. Keys are slightly concave, helping with quick placement. ***TRACKPAD:*** The trackpad is a little sticky, though solid. There are no creaks. There are no clicks until you intend one. You don't have to physically click, however, and Windows allows customization of up to 4 finger taps and drags. Size is right, given the dimensions of the Laptop. ***SCREEN:*** The screen is dated. The same thick bezel and small real estate have greeted us since 2018. The resolution was above average then, but the industry has caught up to Microsoft (and surpassed them). Also apparent is the lack of dynamic range in the panel, and VERY ANNOYINGLY, the Laptop series STILL doesn't have a better than 60 Hz screen! You can't even overclock it. I tried. This is embarrassing for the price. And you still only get 8 bit color. Why are you doing this to us, Microsoft? ***PERFORMANCE:*** Microsoft decided to put the i5-1235U in the Laptop 5, and for most intents and purposes, it was a fine call. They also must have done some deep work engineering the cooling solution, because you have to really push it to get the fan spinning. There is, unfortunately, an uncomfortable, high-pitched whine when you compute hard for longer stints. Performance falls apart, however, when trying to do the slightest of multitasking on the lowest power mode. And on Battery Saver, you get the joy of stuttering. It's unacceptable. The convoluted mess called Windows 11 isn't helping, either. It's a huge resource hog, making 8GB of RAM feel small. Keep it on "better performance" for a good experience. ***SPEAKERS***: The peakers really should have gotten better this generation, but they still aren't sufficient to impress. My unit actually didn't have equal volume between sides. The right speaker is louder. ***BATTERY:*** Battery life is good when you keep it on "Better Performance", and you avoid the stuttering found on the most conservative setting. ***WHY?:*** Why, Microsoft? Why include a proprietary charger when USB C charging works? Why give us 2 ports when you could give us 4? Or 3 plus a card reader? You have nothing useful on the right side of the keyboard. I won't be carrying around the proprietary charger, so that whole side is basically a waste. Why give us a 2230 NVMe!? 2280 is the standard! And why charge so much, when you clearly haven't had to do R&D for this thing in 5 years? ***CONCLUSION:*** You REEALLY have to like the Surface Laptop series to get this one. I loved mine when it was competitive - 4 years ago - but so much has come out to kick Microsoft in the pants since then, and they simply haven't been paying attention. Call it good, Microsoft. You've had a good run with this design.

Beautiful laptop but lacks some things

Out of the box this device has all my attention. Great design, built beautifully with premium quality finishes and amazing (sage) color. Very clean built with a strong aluminum case that gives you that premium look which only certain computers have. Lid can be opened with just one finger and opens and closes easily and quietly. Bottom of the computer is built very clean, no screws, or any kind of removable panels or air vents, and speaking of vents there is only one – where the bottom housing and lid are connected (behind a screen) but so far the temperature is good with no instances of overheating. Also, while amazed with the design, at the same time my first complaint is about part of the design itself - it’s impossible to open it without causing some damage. I am used to being able to open my computers. Size of the computer and screen it’s perfect, I think it couldn’t be better than it actually is. Computer has a very sharp, well-lit touch screen display with amazing graphics which I think will satisfy anyone’s needs. Very good response on the touchscreen which is surpassingly very easy to clean from fingerprints, compared to all other touchscreen devices I owned or used. On the other side, the housing and lid back panel itself are kind of sensitive to fingerprints as well and not that easy to clean as the screen is. Backlit chiclet style keyboard it’s quiet and pleasant to use, so no complaints there. Mousepad is pretty large (in a good way) and very responsive to all touches and gestures. Looking from the front while using this device, it sure looks a lot like a MacBook, but has a touchscreen. Boots up fully in just 7 seconds performing great, opening applications instantly and has great response in multitasking and working with several applications at time. Performance of this laptop is VERY great thanks to the 12 Generation I-5 processor with 8 cores and 12 threads, 8gb RAM and of course 512gb SSD hard drive. Based on the research I did, HDD should be upgradable (not sure about RAM, is it integrated to board or not) but again, only if you succeed to get this device open without causing any damage – which I gave up on and wouldn’t even advise anyone to try. This is again my first complaint, not being able to open it and second - not being able to upgrade it ourselves. Not a deal breaker, just saying it would be nicer if possible. Battery life is good and really lasts through most of the day even with the fact that I was installing a bunch of updates, some applications and watched some video while running on the battery. Windows 11 looks nice and clean, almost minimalistic, I have no complaints about it but honestly I just prefer Windows 10 more. I am saying that just because I am used to 10 and I feel that some items and options are kind of missing in Windows 11 (they are not missing but some are rearranged) and again, I just like Windows 10 more just because I am using it on daily basis, but with time I definitely can get used to Windows 11 as well. Sound is very good, very loud and clear for the laptop, thanks to speakers which are front facing – and this itself makes a huge difference. Camera is 720p, which I think is pretty much standard for all laptops these days, and really who even needs a better camera on a laptop anyway? My last and biggest complaint about this computer is the lack of ports: just one USB 3.1 one Thunderbolt/USB type C port, headphone/audio jack and power connector which by the way works great for me. Power connector is built kind of like a magsafe and it’s a lifesaver in case you or kids around trip on the power cord – it will unplug without breaking any connectors or pulling the computer off the table. For lack of ports, a docking station will cover it but it would be nice if there are more ports than these. Overall I am very satisfied with this computer, great performance and beautiful design.

Size is great and wife loves sandstone color. Touch screen is cool. The speakers are bad on this laptop wife thinks its broken. I think it's cause the speakers are under the keyboard. Also the edge of the monitor shouldn't be so thick almost 2023...

    Beautiful, Practical Workhorse

I have owned several Surface tablets, but this is my first Surface Laptop, and it is simply gorgeous! You need to see it up close and personal to truly appreciate its aesthetics. It is all metal with a spacious keyboard. The keys have nice travel, and it is a pleasure to work on. The sage green can best be described as a greenish gray. The touchpad is nice and spacious, and the screen is lovely. The aspect ratio is 3:2 which is perfect for working with documents. This is a beautiful office workhorse. People are going to look at it and ask you about it. Trust me. Let’s just get this out of the way. One of the reasons you might want to consider this model is its looks. Don’t be ashamed of that. I’m not. I’ve got business to do, and I might as well do it in style. This style suits me well. It is light will travel well, but it will also wear well and last for what I use it for which is office work and travel. I am not reviewing this model in a vacuum. I have seen other reviews here and in the mainstream press that criticize certain aspects of Surface Laptop 5. I am not testing several laptops a month, so I can well imagine that the 12th generation Core i5 processor with 8GB of RAM in this machine will get outperformed by other models. If the spec you need for your purposes is not in this laptop, then shop for another model. This one fully meets my needs and will for some time. I have always gotten the Core i5 Intel model because its performance has met my needs and knocked significant amounts off the purchase price. It has been perfect for me. Let me sum up some of the criticisms and address them from my point of view: 1. “No AMD processor is available this year, and you are stuck with Intel chips, so battery life will suffer.” While last year’s reviewers were impressed with the battery stamina of the AMD model, this year you get a 20 percent increase in performance over last year’s Intel chip. That’s impressive. Yes, I do love long battery life, but I have not found any indication in my use that this model will not last through a full day of work. It easily lasts for up to 10 hours for me. 2. “The bezels are too big.” If that bothers you, then so be it. I’m sure they will get smaller in the next model, but that’s not going to make the average buyer go spring for a brand-new laptop. I love the look of this machine, and the bezels are consistent with the design of this and other Surface products. Did I mention that it’s pretty? 3. “There are not enough ports, but even though there are not enough ports, Microsoft needs to ditch the Surface connector.” This is a puzzling complaint from my standpoint. If you are using any modern laptop of slim design in your office, you are going to need some kind of dock. I already have a Surface dock, as do many Surface users, and it provides a plethora of connections: I have it connected to ethernet and two monitors as well as several other peripherals. Plus, the Surface proprietary connector is Microsoft’s answer to you-know-who’s MagSafe. It is held on by magnets, so if you accidentally knock it loose, the chance is lessened for damage to occur. I am glad they kept it. It is an important part of the existing Surface culture. On the road, the existing USB-A and USB-C ports, the latter of which is Thunderbolt, should suffice for most purposes, and there is a headphone jack, thank goodness! 4. “The webcam is only 720p.” True, but it suffices for my needs and offers a picture as good or better than anyone else participating in my Zoom call. It has also has infrared and works perfectly with Windows Hello to log me in at startup with no user input required. 5. “It is too expensive for what you get.” I don’t think that is a fair criticism. Ultimately, you will have to make that decision for yourself, but I think the price is competitive. This model has a 512GB SSD, which is more than enough for me. You can save even more if you opt for the 256GB model. 6. “I can’t game on this.” The Surface Laptop 5 is not designed to be a top-performer in that category. Your helpful BestBuy associate will direct you to another model. I had been using a Surface tablet lately. It was very light and wonderful to use on the road with the Surface keyboard cover but was not a perfect a laptop replacement. This Surface Laptop makes up for that shortcoming. While it is a full laptop, it is light, good looking and easy to travel with. And it has a touchscreen. Always remember that detail when you are shopping for a laptop. It is generally offered by the manufacturer, but at a higher price. The Surface line of laptops all include touchscreens at no extra charge. Although I use a laptop for work and play, the fact that I need it for work is a factor. While I also have an M1 MacBook Air that I play with, it is not generally my choice for work. This Surface will become my go to machine for work. To me, it’s design is every bit as stunning as the Air and then some. But the Surface has something that all the MacBooks lack: a touchscreen. Any laptop decision is unique to the buyer’s needs and based upon the price paid and performance demanded for the purchasers needs. This one checked all my boxes and grabbed my eye. It still has my eye. Check it out.
