This is not nearly as fun (or long) as 1000 Year Door, but it's at least better than the last few installments. The ring battles are an interesting twist that definitely gets easier with practice and added time badges. I was very disappointed to not see any new characters introduced (other than Olly and Olivia). The final boss battle was annoyingly focused on hitting the button at the exact right time and less about strategy. The trophy collection was cumbersome, especially the river coin challenge. That all being said, it was still fun to play, just definitely not the best of the series.

Loved paper Mario but this one isn’t it chief. It has a good story but the battle modes are so boring that I just tend to avoid everyone. it’s not as fun with everything being “press A”. Literally just pressing A throughout the whole game.

This game is truly fun, well developed, and very enjoyable. Even though I beat the game I’m still trying to find the little Easter egg hunts. Thank you Nintendo for making a great game for the Switch.

Hilarious Game with Make or Break Combat System

Paper Mario: The Origami King is a great game with one caveat: the combat system. Your enjoyment of this game may hinge on your opinion of the ring-based combat system. As opposed to PM64 or The Thousand Year Door, this is not a traditional turn based RPG. Your rotate rings to make patterns with enemies, and gain no XP for winning which de-incentivizes fighting enemies. I didn't hate these fights, but they can get repetitive and annoying.
However, if you can overlook a sub-standard battle system, there is a real gem of a game underneath. This is one of the funniest games you will ever play. Every character is worth talking to because they will say something weird or hilarious. There are bosses like Staplers and Rubber Bands which sounds stupid or strange, but is really funny in a bizarre way. I think the music in this game is so excellent that it deserved soundtrack of the year.
There's a sentimental story in here that can get surprisingly emotional for a Mario game. It doesn't reach the highs of the original 2 games in the series, but if you can come to terms with what the series has become, you're going to have a great time.
This game oozes charm and personality. Exploring the overworld is fun. It's colorful and vibrant. It's not the full return to form I want from the Paper Mario series, but it's undoubtedly a step in the right direction.

This game is fun to play and hard to put down. Haven't noticed too much of a challenge yet. Interesting twist to the combat system, but it gets monotonous after several battles. The story is memorable and funny at times, and the environments are vibrant and colorful. Lots of nooks and crannies to explore and secrets to uncover. Plenty of collectibles too. I found myself humming along to many musical tunes as well. This game is a nice departure from the more recent Paper Mario iterations. Reminiscent of The Thousand Year Door. I wish they would go back to leveling up Mario based on battles completed.

The Unexpected Paper Mario Revival

The Paper Mario series started off strong with its debut game on the N64 and delivered an epic of a tale with GameCube’s Thousand Year Door. However, entries of the series on the 3DS and Wii U have been incredibly disappointing. They lacked the charm and quirkiness that the series was known for. My expectations for Paper Mario and the Origami King were low, but I decided to give it a chance and was thoroughly pleased. The story, the characters, the visuals, and the gameplay felt fresh and had every bit of charm these first two entries of Paper Mario had.
While many criticize the way in which battles play out, I found it to give the series a bit of challenge that the series had always lacked. If you’re into puzzle solving, you’ll probably enjoy it like myself.

The Paper Mario franchise has had a rocky go of it lately; Sticker Star, and to a lesser extent Color Splash, both had battle gimmicks that felt tacked-on and unnecessary. While Oragami King's unique ring battle system can take some getting used to initially and may seem repetitive at times, I found myself having a lot of fun with it. If you enjoy puzzle games, you may also find some appeal with the increasingly challenging battle system. Battling aside, Oragami King’s visuals, story, and humor all make this a standout game, and definitely worth a play-through.

I personally love the game so far. I love the story line and all the characters. The conversations are humorous and I feel like the characters have a lot of depth. I especially love Olivia, she cracks me up. I like that its a gradual discovery of what you can do and how you can make life better in the game; like eventually 1 hitting enemies with your hammer so you dont have to battle them, increasing your health, equipping items, freeing more members of the toad town and getting access to shops for better tools and items. It feels like a mario game and an rpg at the same time. The design of it all is beautiful and creative, and the though I do find some battles repetitive its not all that bad. Its a unique refreshing experience. I love the dungeon like areas (although they could be more difficult and longer) and all the boss fights are unique and fun and the bosses have personalty to match and remember. There are many way to fight and beat the bosses which makes it exciting that not everyone is fighting the same way. I feel especially satisfied finding all the secret toads and chests . There is so much to do and collect. You can even go sail the seas! And fishing! Lol The confetti animation by the way is a joy to see everytime I throw it (also the water animation) .The game is crisp, stunning and popping in color. Each time I put the game down I feel happy inside like I did playing all my favorite childhood games. Maybe its not for everyone, but I think if more people give it a try they might find they will really enjoy it!

I haven't plaid a Paper Mario game since Super Paper Mario on the Wii. I remember really enjoying that game but not too many details. But I love RPGs and I had fond memories of the franchise, so I thought I'd give it a try.
I'll start with what I love... the graphics are gorgeous, this is a beautiful game to look at. Nintendo is killing it with the textures and lighting in games lately and produces results I was not expecting on the Switch considering it's not as "powerful" as PlayStation and XBox rivals. The story so far from what I've played is fun, and there's a lot of very cute humor.
BUT it doesn't feel like an RPG to me (other than a lot of talking) there's not much of a leveling or skills system that I've seen so far. But my biggest problem is the combat. I am not a fan of the weird tedious puzzle rings to line up the enemies before combat. Maybe I'm just getting old... but I'm not a fan of this combat system. And the boss battles are even worse.
So this is a tough one for me. I love all things Mario, the graphics are beautiful, the story seems fun so far, I WANT to like this game so much. But with the battle system I have to admit I kind of regret buying this one. MAYBE it will grow on me, and I'll keep trying to play it, but I can't give it a glowing recommendation. I'd say watch some reviews online that show the battle system. If that looks fun to you then you'll probably enjoy this game. If you're looking for a more traditional RPG, you may be disappointed.

The story is in depth, the challenges are tough, but fun! The world map is spread out and thorough! Some of the battles are annoying, reminiscent of Paper Mario Paint, but go more quickly. The music i great, the graphics are great!
The more you level up, you can avoid those annoying battles too!

This was my first Paper Mario game. I was completely blew aback by the great dialogue, attention to detail, and engaging gameplay in Paper Mario Origami King. I sunk 40 hours into it and it was an engaging, enjoyable experience all the way through. I'm glad I picked this up!
Some folks have complained about the puzzle-like combat being a grind, but I never personally felt that it got too stale. I never fled from a battle, and I didn't even use much of the items during combat. I stuck to the variety of boots and hammers for the majority of the game. If it felt too challenging, there were options to get the toads you rescue throughout the game to help out and you could always tank the damage and heal up after.
Others weren't too fond of the boss designs, but I thought they were on point and made each boss battle unique! I was especially surprised that the game didn't feel rushed towards the end, and instead discovered there was even more content to go through! Overall a 5/5 game and hoping to see a sequel for the series!

I really liked Paper Mario: The Origami King, it has really good dialogue, fantastic music, and it visually looks beautiful. The battle system will definitely be a hit or miss for people, I really liked the puzzle solving aspect of the battles but some people may not like that aspect. Most of the bosses are pretty fun but there are some that were a bit of a pain, but overall I really liked Paper Mario: The Origami King.

Not a big fan of turned based combat but sometimes the atmosphere and storytelling of certain games make me give them a try anyway. Went in blind to this and couldn't put it down. The world building is awesome, the characters and really fun, and the gameplay (even the combat) is engaging. Highly recommended.

Although the battling system isn’t what it used to be, and experience points are still gone and replaced by the coin system, this game is still a blast to play and offers witty dialogue and interesting boss battles. The normal enemy battles can get a little stale, but at least some thought was put into it and the puzzle solving will keep you entertained for long enough. Story is also great.

I'll preface this by saying The Thousand Year Door is a wonderful and arguably the perfect Paper Mario game. For some reason Nintendo keeps trying to reinvent the wheel with this series and ironically, the wheel is the way you fight enemies in this installment. Every encounter is a puzzle (good) where you have a limited amount of time to make decisions on how to deal the most damage. You get coins to buy special moves (bad) that allow you to defeat enemies faster feeding into the cycle of getting more money to spend on things to finish fights faster. There are no experience points, there are no levels and the only sense of progression is through the wonderful story.
The writing in this game is superb and will no doubt leave you with a smile at times. The music is good, the graphics are amazing and the sound effects are true to Nintendo's quality. I only wish they would reflect on what made this series so good and reiterate the battle system for the next installment to bring it more in line with other jrpgs.

Very good game for Paper Mario fans. While it is not quite the same as the original N64 ones, it was still fun to play an RPG type of Mario game again. I would recommend this for any Mario fan that would like to have some laughs with the dialogue as they play through it.
