My whole experience with this software was a nightmare, with one exception, the service I recieved from my local Best Buy emoloyees was excellent, I do not remember their names but they searched high and low to find the 1 box of this program they have left. I am fairly tech savvy but I was unfamiliar with this program so I read the instructions looked at their website and followed the on screen instructions. It seems pretty straight froward except I think they make you have to call their tech support so tech support can up sale you. I was trying to transfer one laptop programs to a new laptop that was clean. everything went smoothly until the transfer. Tried numerous times, finally called tech support which is advertised on the website and the box as FREE. It is anything but free unless you get upset. I ended up getting angry with them on the phone because they kept telling me that the old computer would have registry files that are not "clean" DUH it is a 10 year old computer, if it didn't I would be amazed! To make a long story short, they got on and ran a "test" to which the "untrained" eye would have said "oooo they know what their doing" and in fact it was no different than a CTRL + ALT + DELETE, just through a different way of doing it. Overall the call turned into me asking them who i need to get paid for my time for having to call tech support which was supposed to be FREE and then taking over an hour and a half to fix my problem, they ended up running a .exe file and guess what it magically worked after that!!!!! (this is the reason I believe they force you to call tech support). Also after the transfer was done, my important information, that i originally bought the program for, was not transferred, but guess what showed up, games like candy crush saga, and their equivelent soda game, as well as a bunch of other BS. DO NOT BUY THIS PROGRAM!!!!! there are much better ways of transferring files, I wanted to be lazy and fairly cheap so this is the route i went and it ended up being more complicated than just using a good ol fashioned USB drive and transferring manually. BEST BUY PLEASE FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR CUSTOMERS STOP SELLING THIS GARBAGE PROGRAM!!! the only reason I did not rerturn it is because it is software that I intentionally purchased and the staff at the location gave me excellent service.

    Limited Uses

I read quite a number of reviews before deciding to buy this product. I must admit the two things that influenced me the most was a hearty endorsement by Microsoft, the other being laziness on my part. My intended use was to move a large number of files from my XP computer to my Windows 7 computer. As you know, when upgrading or switching from Microsoft XP to Microsoft Windows 7, Microsoft will not automatically move your programs or files. You must reinstall the programs and move the files yourself. PCmover claims to do both. Now most people can move files and folders from one computer to another so the main attraction to me of PCmover was that it would move programs without me having to reinstall them. Unfortunately PCmover failed miserably at moving programs. Also, om the lower side of the box in incredibly small printing is a notice informing the buyer you may only use this program from ONE originating computer to ONE target computer. You must purchase extra licenses to use the program beyond that. Anyway, the program transfer failed so miserably that I called support and asked them if I could retransfer from my same originating computer to the same target computer, but to a different operating system (from XP to XP instead of XP to Windows 7) and was told that that would require another license. I reiterated to them it was still the same computers and only one transfer, just to a different operating system so my programs would work. They still said no and that I had to purchase another license. At that point I decided to follow most of the computer experts advice and transfer all the files and folder manually (easy) and reinstall all my programs from scratch (time consuming, but much more accurate.) I found that when I removed PCmover from my target computer that it still left over 70MB of files and who knows what on my computer that I had to manually remove myself!!! Needless to say, I wish I would have saved my time, trouble, and money and listened to the one and two star reviews but sometimes lessons need to be learned the hard way. I would heartily recommend if upgrading from Microsoft XP to Windows 7 or Windows 10 that you save your own time, trouble, and money and move your programs, files, and folders manually. I'm sure you will save a headache or two in the process. By the way, I could not find ANY kind of guarantee of success or satisfaction ANYWHERE on their website, in their instructions, nor on their box after I purchased their product. It seems to me that any reputable company will stand behind their product so it appears their LACK OF ANY KIND OF GUARANTEE speaks volumes of their integrity.

Made a mess of my machine

After using this software, I confirmed what others have said about this program: it works for some and not for others. For this process I had a older 32 bit machine with Windows 10 transferring to a new 64 bit Windows 10 machine. I had thought that this would be relatively easy since both machines had the same OS installed. In my case, on my old machine, for security purposes, I set up a non-admin user account from which to do my day to day work. For the most part after I did the transfer I could use the new admin account, but it made a mess of my new non-admin user account. I ended up having to blow away that account and just use toe admin account. I keep my data separate from my programs by creating a separate data partition on my machine. I do this to facilitate restoring from a backup if I need to. I therefore relocated the My documents files to the data partition. When I used this software, it created a My Documents directory in my admin account and moved some files there, It also moved some files to my data drive and it duplicated some files on both. I had to end up combining everything and doing it manually. Not all of my software transferred. It appears that just popular titles transfer and it ignores many applications. I could not find a list of the files it did not transfer and had to go through one by one to find what was missing. The Ethernet cable provided was not recognized by the software and therefore useless. I ended up using my wireless network to do the transfer. The license is only good for one time. If you blow away the mess that was made and want to start over, you are informed that you have used up your license. Worst of all, Best Buy will not take the software back after the box is opened, so you have to rely on Laplink for a refund. Several reviewers said that they have waited months and not seen their refund. Bottom line: If your machine has only one user, only one partition, you only use popular software, and you don't need to rely on the cable they provide, it might work for you. Make sure that you have a backup of your new machine before you start. Good luck.

Does transfer some apps, very bad tech support

    CaveatEmptor

I bought PC Mover Professional to transfer applications and files from an old HP PC to a new HP PC, both running Windows 10. The old PC had a 512 GB drive, the new PC had a 256 GB SSD (C:) and a 1 TB hard drive (D:). My goal was to transfer the applications to the SSD and the data files (documents, pictures, music) to the HD. PC Mover moved most of my applications (it said it was unable to move a few), but only about half of them worked on the new PC. This meant uninstalling the faulty programs and cleaning up the Registry before reinstalling them from the original media, which took longer than it would have to just install them on the new PC. When I went back to PC Mover to move the data files to the HD (D:), PCMover ignored the configuration changes and kept trying to put the files on the SSD (C:), then would error that there wasn't enough room on the C: drive. I contacted LapLink tech support by phone and was told this is a "known" problem and that I should contact "level 2" tech support the next day (level 2 tech support only works M-F, business hours). I contacted level 2 support by chat the next day and they kept telling me to do what I'd already done to configure PC Mover to use the D: drive. Then they told me I had to call a number so that someone could remote access my PC, and gave me the number of level 1 tech support. I called them again and they gave me yet another number to call level 2 tech support, Level 2 tech support told me only level 1 tech support could use remote access, which is just bizarre, but I could submit a level 2 support ticket to receive support by email. I did, and later that day received a reply telling me to use the configuration settings that I explicitly said had not worked. I finally gave up and used network sharing and Windows ability to change the location of files to transfer my data files. The PC Mover app is half baked, the tech support is completely useless (they just keep reading from the same script, even when you tell them that did not work), and level 2 tech support apparently does not know about what level 1 tech support described as a "known issue". I would give PC Mover a lower rating except that it did successfully move half my applications. However, I'm not sure it was worth the money or the aggravation.

I just finished using this product successfully, but not for the quoted price. I purchased the download from the link at Microsoft Windows and ran into trouble right away. Like the other reviews that stated that you get a sales pitch to clean your laptop when you contact tech assistance, I got the pitch. I declined initially so I was offered a discount and was ready to take it. (I have no idea how to fix these issues on my own!) I paid the $69 for the tech assistance and it was well worth it. My 6 year-old PC was a windows 8 and was rapidly becoming problematic. The tech cleaned up that old PC and transferred all of my files to my new laptop windows 10. It took an hour on the phone to diagnose everything, 2 hours to clean it up, and almost 4 hours for the transfer which is not bad if you've read the reviews and are prepared for it to take that long. Our session just ended and my new laptop has everything on it, perfectly. My old PC is running so much smoother and the best part is that I didn't spend hours transferring everything by hand. I spent that time playing with my kids instead. I know lots of people have given the tech support negative reviews, but I've had a great experience and hope this review will help others who might be hesitating about spending extra for help

I wanted to transfer programs from my old laptop to my new desktop. I was led to believe that it would move most of the programs without having to reinstall. Good in theory but did not work for me. Installed the program on both computers and it appeared to work well indicating what it could move and what it could not. Problems soon started when the laptop froze up and everything stopped. Called support and got a tech who offered to troubleshoot by remote access to both computers. I was on the phone for over an hour and was informed that my laptop had malware. I had scanned the computer prior to installing pc mover and it was clean. He offered a program to "fix" the problem to ensure a clean transfer but I was not going to buy another product from this company. Bottom line, I did manage to get a few things transferred but lost most of my photos and the majority of my other info. My laptop went dead and would not reboot so I am going to have to let the geek squad see if they can salvage my info. Lesson learned will let the Geek Squad trans fer the info in the future.

Not a fun experience. Bought a new computer and bought 'state of art software' to transfer data from old computer to new. If Laplink is state of art, will go back to manual. Anyway, finally did work, but was no a fun 48 hours. Ethernet cable did not work at all - software kept asking for network, but provided no options, and my computer was not on a network anyway! Then called Tech Support. What a joke. They are not support. They are sales. They run security software, then tell you your old computer is corrupt and that is why not working. Offer to fix for $99.99, then $69.99. Maybe would have gone lower, but at that point hung up, thoroughly disgusted with having been conned into a sales call. Back to computers. Tried usb cable. Did not work first time, then plugged in both usb and ethernet cables, then initiated using ethernet, backed up and switched to usb, did not unplug cables as told to do and did not restart as logic might dictate. Viola - it worked. Said would take 4 hours; took 2. Did not transfer favorites but seemed to do well otherwise. So much for logic.

This is the second time I’ve purchased a laplink software and this is the second time the program didn’t work for Sh**! I have a new i7 windows 10 computer and wanted to transfer everything from my 8yo computer (also running latest windows10) to the new one. Used this software to attempt to transfer programs and files. The personal files never went to the new computer, laplink only wanted to put them in Drop-box. Of the 77 programs that I have Laplink only wanted to move 7 of them, as it felt the others would be non-compatible (even though both computers are running the same OS). Of the programs it did “move” none of them worked. One went to a new install startup screen (Quicken) and Adobe photoshop only had the welcome page, nothing else would every load. Why Microsoft would recommend this company is beyond my comprehension, the windows 8 built in file transfer program worked perfectly why did Microsoft do away with what works? Then the kicker… they have a help phone number for “free transfer assistance” that is 877-904-9644… the number is not connected. Worst purchase ever from Best Buy and worst recommendation from Microsoft ever (and I even didn’t mind both window 8 or 10) also need to have a zero or minus star rating!!!

PC Mover comes with a lot of promises but does not deliver. The product is advertised to easily move files from one computer to another. The problem is that they do not tell you about the potential problems that are very likely to arise. If you have an older computer and want to move files, more than likely your old system has some problems. Those problems have to be fixed before PC Mover will work. I called their customer service and spent an hour letting them view the files of my old and new computer. After an hour, I was told that there were too many problems with the old computer for PC Mover to work. Then the other shoe dropped. They could "possibly" fix the old computer for $199! And there was no promise that would work. When I said no, they wanted to pass me off to the manager who was more of a sales closer. Microsoft endorses this product and they should rethink their support. Plus Best Buy should rethink even selling this software. It is horrible.

    Data Transfer Incomplete and Unreliable

    Posted
    Ruvicha

I used this to try to transfer files from a Windows Vista machine to Windows 7. Right off the bat, PC Mover indicated that a lot of data probably would not transfer to the new machine. So right there, that made the product questionable. But I set it up to transfer what it could. It finished about two hours later. I've been discovering ever since that it failed to transfer entire folders and documents -- these were not data that are incompatible with Windows 7, but rather word documents, spreadsheets and other files that should easily and reliably have moved over. As a consequence, I have no confidence that PC Mover has saved the data that I needed to save, which means I'm back to going through my data folder by folder, putting things on a thumb drive and transferring them manually. My recommendation; skip this product, get an easy transfer cable (if Best Buy has one on hand -- I couldn't find one in three Best Buy stores) and use the Windows Easy Transfer software that comes with your new computer. I don't know that it will work better, but it probably can't be worse.

    Successful Program and Data Transfer

It worked! Our new computer has a bunch of programs and all my data files transferred from my old computer. It took two full days to complete the transfer, even with the Ethernet wire connection. I had a lot of music, photo, and video files, which took the most time. Disabling Power Saving on both computers was key (screen saver was okay to use). Despite that, the transfer stopped twice, and I had to restart the process from the beginning on both computers. Fortunately, the data transfer picked up where it left off. It is important to run the program until everything is transferred. The last thing to transfer are all the licenses and registry settings for the transferred programs. During the transfer setup, I chose to not transfer the D: drive, and I deselected programs that I did not want transferred. I had to manually make those changes, which was pretty easy and intuitive using the LapLink transfer interface. I still ended up transferring one program that I didn't need, so I just uninstalled it later using the Control Panel. Microsoft Office did not transfer. That was fine for me, because I bought a subscription to MS Office 365 beforehand and installed it after the software transfer. I would gladly use this product again the next time I replace our main computer. The software is only good for one-time use, so I will have to purchase another one, hopefully many years from now.

I'm not an expert on PC transfer kits. I only used this once, since I only had one PC to transfer. Also, I've never used a PC transfer kit before. That being said, once I got it set up it did what the package promised--moved my files and programs from my old Windows XP PC to my new Windows 7 machine. Installing the program wasn't hard, but it was finicky. I got it to install on the first try, but it did require a number of steps first on one PC and then the other and I had to read the instructions carefully. The kit comes with an ethernet cable to connect the old PC and the new one directly. Once everything was installed I only had to start the transfer and wait. The transfer took about 8 hours; this may have been due to my old PC being much slower than the new one. The results were very satisfactory, but they weren't perfect. PCmover transferred my web browser and favorites, but the passwords for many sites didn't make the transition. The same is true for programs that require a serial number for validation. Likely this is due to those sites' and programs' security setup; I don't think this is a flaw in the transfer kit, just something to be aware of. All in all, PCmover isn't perfect, but it saved me a lot of work and it was worth buying.

I had last used PC Mover in 2015 when I moved everything to a new lap top. I was kind of troubled by negative reviews I was reading because the overall experience was mostly positive last time around. After installing the software on both computers I followed the standard instructions. And 6 hours later I had everything I needed from my old computer on my new. I was worried because I had a few Adobe Cs6 programs that are not supported or sold anymore and I had lost the key. No worries, they were transferred and activated as promised. The only minor hitch was my Office 365 programs. They were transferred but wouldn't work because the computer configuration was different than the subscription. I only needed to update the subscription and reinstall and I was good to go. I don't know how it could be easier to get what you need off your old computer on to your new one than PC Mover.

When I purchased this product, it states on the box that there is 24-hour support line to assist in setting it up. When I called the person I talked to ran some tests remotely and said I needed to clear over a Gig of files on my original computer before migrating the files to the new computer. The files were duplicates, cache, temporary files, etc. I said that would be fine. He then said I needed to pay in excess of $200 for him to clear the files and that it would include a year of service to assist me on maintaining my computer system. I was not happy. It seems like a scam. He would not help me setup the software unless I agreed to purchase the service. I hung up and performed the clearing of files and migrating them to the new computer without using the software. It was essentially useless to me.

I recently had to move to a new computer due to hardware issues with previous computer. My previous computer was partitioned and Laplink PC mover moves everything to Drive C. The partioned files were put into a folder on drive C naming it Drive(Letter of partition-foler name, for example "Drive_E". Works pretty well as most programs recognize that as the link. However not all programs worked which ment reinstalling or changing settings. In some cases had to uninstall before reinstalling. Another problem was required Serial Numbers even though valid on previous computer did not work. Had to get software providers permission after explaining to update. A number of links had to be updated such as documents, excel, etc. were not found since they had moved from original file location. Still all in all was better than trying to make the move manually. I have many programs and files.

After checking reviews on this site and others, I was hesitant to purchase this item. But I was in a hurry to get something done so I took a chance. So glad I did. Installation was simple ( I purchased the box edition with CD and transfer cable ). After reading instructions I was extremely apprehensive because it warned me that the target PC had to have the same or newer OS. I was transferring from a win 10 computer TO a Win 7 machine. But too late now. Started the program and walked away. Next morning I went to the Win 7 and everything had transferred with no errors, including bookmarks and passwords from Chrome. So while it definitely is hit or miss, if you get it for the right price it's worth a try.

It's a 'one trick pony', but what a trick it does. Used it to transfer from Windows 7 to Windows 10. The interface was not real intuitive but it does a decent job of guiding a person through the steps. Performed the transfer using a direct connection between computers, (via the supplied cable). Speed of operations seemed limited more by the computer hard drive than anything else. Total time needed will vary depending on products installed as well as number of photos, documents, videos, etc. Count on multiple hours. Full price is a bit much for a one time usage, but competitive with other products out there. Cannot comment on customer support since I did not need to contact them. Other reviews indicate it's less than stellar. As is standard these days, there is virtually no documentation with the product and it does require an online update before using.

I have read many reviews good and bad on this version. Here is the most important thing. READ THE DIRECTIONS. You must make sure all updates for windows are done and that you do not have applications running. I did 2 machines ( yes you have to buy one for each) and used the laplink Ethernet cable. Both completed with out issues (about 2 hrs per machine of 90 gb of data per machine) and aside from a few re-certifications, it worked perfectly. ALL my programs, data and setting were perfect. So if you don't want to reinstall every program and re save all your website passwords etc this is a superior product.

My advice is to follow the instructions very carefully and to make sure that there is nothing that will interrupt the transfer which takes a long time to complete. Any "notification" (yes you HP and its users) or screen saver or "update" (yes you Microsoft) will crash the transfer and can make you start over. At the least it will stop the transfer and you will lose time until you come back to restart it (it's like watching paint dry or grass grow if you want to sit there and stare at it). However the final result is that everything gets transferred (except the encrypted or locked to your device stuff (yes you Apple and iTunes). The money and time is well worth not having the frustrations of moving all the settings and favorites and everything else. Given the huge number of variables involved LapLink has done an outstanding job on this product.

Do not buy this product. Maybe it works sometimes, but it's not worth the risk. We ran it on my wife's computer. It took 8 hours. After 8 hours, it claimed the transfer had been successful. The program on the new computer, however, froze, and we could not find any of the files. We called tech support at PCmover. They couldn't explain what had happened, but promised that for another $100, they could make it work. For some reason, I fell for it After going through a series of online fixes over the last four hours, they succeeded in breaking the new computer so thoroughly, that as I type, it can't even be restored to factory settings. This is a lousy product with lousy tech support. A massive fail.
