    Nice Laptop

First Sony Vaio ever. I am Apple fan, but had to buy a pc for a project that only runs in pc and wanted to buy a pc that I could stay with it for a long time. I knew I would have to spend a lot of time in configuring, rebooting, etc., and I did (no fun) After all that was done, the pain was to get used to Windows 8. Those titles are really pointless, once you get out of those squares, everything is like almost the same as previous versions of windows (still buggy, ex. those notifications that never go away). The power cable was not long enough. The flip mode is quite cool and it works great in tablet mode. Overall a great computer for the price and quality. The missing start here is due to the cooler. That thing is really noise and no stop, it is really annoying. Not sure why the engineers can't follow the MacBook Pro quality in that area, anyway. I still recommend.

Concept is good but unstable operationally

The concept of converting to a tablet was great, especially for business presentation to a client. Unfortunately, for the price of the laptop, I expected a stable laptop. The mouse seemed to just have a mind of it's own, it will either disappear or move without being prompted. The HDMI would not connect to a projector. The system would close out an active application without notice...annoying. Lack of at a DVD drive is disappointing. Already brought to Bestbuy 3X to fix, now will take 2-3 weeks to fix. Only 3 months old. Disappointed...

    Excellent everyday laptop

This is the best laptop I've ever own. Great size, and very light to carry around everyday. Definitely worth giving it a try. If you're tired of Macs and want more like a Pc experience, this is the one to go for. You surely will not regret it. It's fast, light, has good speakers, and looks great compared to mac book air or any other ultrabooks. Plus, the convertible screen tops it all, and gives you more flexibility. Sony did it this time. Well done!

after 8 years of owning a vaio sz480, I finally found this vaio flip worthy enough of a replacement for the sz. I really like the 4th gen i5, battery life, and almost never hear the fan. Like others have said, just make sure to run the vaio updates first and then update to windows 8.1. this is the best laptop-tablet hybrid that I tried out.

Its a great 2 in 1. Its almost 2 months and i find this laptop a great machine.. The fan is little audible under stress.. But i dont think there is any silent ultra books.. The only gripe is almost all desktop software are not optimized for high dpi display like this.. So it looks fussy..Not a Sony problem... Overall i like everything about this laptop or tablet.. I use 50% in tablet mode...

Two bad ones back to back?

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

There's not much to say. I bought one of these, got it home, and began to install my typical stuff. Firefox, AVG, Microsoft Office...then, I go to boot it back up and it locks on the start screen. The mouse moves around but I can't click on anything. It won't do ANYTHING. So I power cycle...same thing. I take the laptop back to the store and they exchange it for another one. I figure maybe I just got a bad one with hardware issues. I get the new one home and start to install the stuff previously mentioned. Works fine. I get it all set up the way I want it, uninstall the bloatware, etc and shut if down for the night. The next day after work, I boot it up and it locks on the start screen. If I'm quick after initial boot up, I can get to the desktop. But shortly after that it just locks up and you can't do anything. Now...I'm no dummy when it comes to computers. There's some sort of faulty hardware or possibly a bad factory OS image. That being said, I'm not going to get into troubleshooting a laptop that's brand new. I'd rather just take it back and not deal with the headache. I haven't found anyone else with these issues online. I'm taking this second one back and getting my money back. It's too bad, too, because I really love the design of the laptop.

    Very Disappointed

I have been waiting for over a week for this laptop to be available and was able pick it up at a BB store today. I bought the laptop because of its unique flip design and the ability to use a stylus to draw in tablet mode. The initial "what's included" description of the product on BB's website indicated that a stylus was included. Well, a stylus was not included in my box and when I went back to the BB website the description had changed and the stylus was no longer listed as included...although a picture of the laptop with a stylus next to it still appears on the product page on BB's website. As of today, the stylus appears to be available only on Sony's website and costs $40. The second disappointment was when I opened the laptop. When the screen is up, the bottom of the screen raises the back of the laptop up slightly with two nubs located on the bottom outside edge of the screen. However, the nubs are hard plastic and cause the laptop to slide on hard surfaces. The third disappointment was when I turned on the laptop and saw significant light bleed coming from the entire horizontal edge of the bottom of the screen. The fourth disappointment occurred during the setup process when the laptop shut itself down in the middle of the setup and after I entered my account information. I have spent the last 4 hours trying to restart/refresh/reset the laptop without success. The laptop will not reset to factory condition without some type of recovery media, but no recovery media is included in the box, I could not find any recovery media on Sony's website either, and the laptop will not stay on long enough to create any recovery media. The assist button and recovery modes all start up but eventually shut down before doing anything. Sony has apparently released some software updates to address the problems that I am having, but the laptop will not stay on long enough to update. I don't think this hardware/software was ready for release. I recommend waiting at least a few weeks to purchase so that laptops with updated software make it to the shelves. While I think the laptop still looks promising, this experience #and the lack of a $40 stylus in the box and the light bleed on the bottom of the screen# has soured me on this particular Sony laptop.

Slick machine, but way too many problems

Has good specs: very lightweight, the solid state drive means it boots up in seconds, the flip feature works pretty well (but awkward and two hands required to switch), the microphone and cameras work well, and the keyboard is a pleasure to type on. Overall it runs really well (except for Windows 8 which is horrible, but not much Sony can do about that). However, it's just been full of problems. The most significant is that the charging port is terrible. They tried to make it like Apple where it comes right out if you trip over the cord, but what they got was that you have to fiddle with the cord constantly to find that "magic" spot where it actually charges, and then the slightest bump means starting over. Probably related, even if you do find a spot where the computer runs on power, it often says "plugged in, not charging" whether you're at 5% or 90%. Tonight, it's been at 57% for over an hour The multi-touch gesture pad is a mess. I think it's supposed to have a left and right area, but it's not well distinguished, so sometimes a two-finger press is a right-click, sometimes not, and other times you mistakenly do the wrong thing with one finger. About 1 time in 10, you feel and hear it click, but the computer doesn't register a mouse action. You'll find yourself mashing your finger down in short order. And sometimes, the mouse gets stuck in down position, and then you apparently have to click furiously to get it unstuck. Sometimes, the wireless drivers just uninstall. You start up the computer, and they're gone. The unit doesn't have an RJ-45 port, so you have no Internet. You use another device to go into live chat with Sony, and they tell you to re-download them. While you don't have Internet. Their other solution is to download on a friend's computer. Not very convenient while you're traveling or at a client's. The worst problem, also related to power, is that sometimes the computer just doesn't start up unless you have it plugged in. As soon as you plug it in (and find the magic power spot), it starts up just fine. When you talk with online help, they say to press the tiny battery reset button on the bottom. Even if you carry around a paper clip at all times, pressing that button does nothing. The battery is completely internal, so there's no way to remove and reinstall it myself without voiding the warranty. And other times when the power cord is moved even slightly, the computer loses power completely, even with plenty of battery. So you might try restarting it eight times before you can finally work. I bought this for a long trip, and Sony won't fix the charging port until I get back, if they will at all. They don't give me a straight answer either way. The other problems are just not eligible for repair or replacement. If I hadn't come on this trip during the return period, I would have returned it weeks ago. Now I'm stuck with expensive unreliable junk. For the same money, buy yourself something that doesn't say Sony on it.

The worst laptop I have ever used

My last laptop no longer worked, and I was excited to get something new and different. When shopping, I liked the slim size and ability to use it as a laptop and a tablet. it was too long after I got it home that I came to hate it. I have never had to deal with such an annoying power cord. They designed it in such a way that you can't dare sit down on a comfy chair or sofa and have it at an angle, because it will hit the surface of the chair/sofa and immediately and continually pop out. It takes the slightest bump to knock it loose. The mouse pad is horrific. It is so incredibly delicate, and you are constantly pulling screens in different directions and opening apps you had previously opened, because you touch too far right or too far left or for too long. However, when you want to click on something, it takes multiple times of clicking on the mouse pad to get whatever it is to open, because you have to hit at just the right place. This computer has no hibernation mode, which I hate. The most frustrating part is that when you have not used the laptop for a little while and it goes into a different mode like sleep mode, the laptop loses internet connectivity, and it must be restarted EVERY TIME. I am so tired of losing websites, documents, etc because of this poorly built laptop. Microsoft 8 also sucks. This laptop was not cheap, and it was not at all worth the money.

I was looking for a lite laptop or a tablet. A Best Buy employee showed me the different products and he had a lot of info. He told me about the Sony 2 in 1 laptop. I bought it on the spot and brought it home. I did do research on laptops. 8 gb of memory, touch screen that can turn into a tablet, max. 2.5 turbo gighertz intel I5, hdmi output, speakers were quiet at max., windows 8 64 bit, lots of software but clogs up ssd, less then 10 sec. when waking up. It had total 1 hour on it when it shut off in the middle of listening to Pandora. I went back and exchanged it. I thought I had the bad one, its a Sony so how could it be bad lol. Next one had 2 hours on it and it would shut down but it would restart. Not wanting to deal with anymore problems I returned it. I was sad I thought I had found my new laptop. Best Buy gave me no problem in returning it and I got every cent back. Another problem was that it said 128 gb ssd but after all the software preinstalled you had about 56 gb left for you to save on, not 128 gb. You could write on screen with your finger and the laptop would convert to text. the camera wasn't great but it has facial recognition instead of password. Speakers were not loud at 100%. Overall Best Buy has the laptop not me and now I have to research more for a better laptop. I hope this helps anyone looking for laptops.

Great when it worked, but unreliable

We tested and reviewed several 2 in1 laptops, and this was by far our favorite. When it was working, it worked great. Unfortunately, after getting two units in a row with severe issues we had to move to another brand. The 1st one we got booted up fine; however when we did the windows update on that 1st use, the update failed and the unit was toast. We did all of the recommended troubleshooting but Windows would not load. The screen was on but blank. We exchanged it for another assuming it was a fluke. We had better luck with the second one. The WIFI was inconsistent, but everything else seemed to be working for a while. After 3 days of light use (1-2 hours each day), the computer became very sluggish and ultimately would freeze. Upon restart the computer would freeze about 5 minutes after boot every time. We brought the 2nd unit to geek squad for diagnosis to determine if we had bad luck, were doing something wrong, or if there were known issues. The next day we were told the unit was beyond repair. Windows was not working due to a failure with the SSD. When asked, they admitted they have seen several of the Sony machines come back for service or return. We opted not to try a 3rd time, and got a Lenovo instead. It's too bad because when working the machine was perfect for us. We ultimately had to get a machine we liked less, but was stable and reliable.

    Defective screen - returned

Great convertible design and very light but returned immediately as the screen had a major problem with backlight bleed thru the upper right hand corner. Given I was going to be doing a lot of ohoto work with the laptop this is just not acceptable. Rethinking buying a Sony laptop at this point. Disappointing as I love the design. Props to Best Buy for hassle free returns - I've purchased 5 laptops for myself and family over the last 5 years at Best Buy and had to return 2 (including this one) for obvious hardware defects out of the box that you'd think the factory would have caught - makes me very reluctant to buy a laptop from a retailer that doesn't have such a good return policy.

Big flaw in failing touch screen

The computer is fast and easy to use, but these qualities have been rendered nearly useless by a screen that went blank after one year. Since Sony no longer makes it, it took months to fix and quickly broke again

I was so excited about the form factor and display of this computer, but we never got it started. The power supply overheated when charging and it was missing a network adapter so we could not get a wireless connection. Windows 8 hung at times and there were links that did not respond to touch or keyboard. Do not buy this computer!!!!!!!!!!!Very poor quality for Sony, a company whose name used to stand for the best there is and for innovation. I am returning it for a Lenovo.

Do not buy! I've had this PC for 2 months and the sound stopped working all of a sudden and some applications are not loading. The technical support from Sony couldn't fix it and now I have to send it to them and wait for 15 business days until it gets back. I spent hours with the technical support and they won't replace it either. Save yourself from the extra headache.

From the beginning the wireless card would stop working. This required the system to be restarted, but was eventually fixed by running the Vaio update software that updated many of the drivers and BIOS. Days after updating it will no longer boot up, and shows no charging connection. I made one call to Sony support about the wireless card. They had me reboot the system, which reset the wireless and allowed it to function. They made no mention of updating the drivers via the Vaio update. I discovered the updates myself. Sony tech support was not helpful. Taking the brick to Best Buy for a return.
