Some will argue these already bloated movies don't need more filler, but I always enjoy the added scenes. This "prequel trilogy" is definitely not as good as 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy, but there is definitely fun to be had here. There's an extended chariot scene on a frozen river with the wargs and the mountain goats that gets kind of gory, with the wargs getting splattered by the chariots, but I still think for it to get an R rating there could of been more blood, at least the big battle with Thorin and Azog could've been a bit more visceral. The picture quality, 3d quality, and sound quality is on par with the theatrical bluray, which are all excellent. There's hours of bonus features, which I myself have not gone through. The biggest problem with this set his the very high asking price of 45 dollars. That's a lot of coin for a movie release, so I can't wholeheartedly recommend that people run out and buy it. I bought mine on the first week when it was on sale for about 35 dollars, which was a little steep, but so far, that's the cheapest I've seen it. If the rating would allow it. I would give it 3.5 stars I will mark it as a recommend, but at a better price point.

I did not prepare for this movie by re-watching the prior 2 films... MISTAKE - I really think you need that context fresh in your mind to enjoy this; it is, after all, the climax. I did not like the first third of this film because the others simply weren't fresh in my mind. Once the battle starts I couldn't help but get into the film. My criticism was too much CGI...WAYYYYYYY to much CGI... the orcs that were actors made up looked and moved 100X better than the mo-cap guys. There were some scenes that I couldn't abide such as a battle scene with Sauruman, Galadrial, Gandalf and Elrond fighting the ring wraiths and Sauron X Men style - which must have been made up... I can't conceive of this scene ever having been in any appendix materials connected to anything Tolkein ever wrote... over all I enjoyed the film despite myself. I am hoping that a second viewing in context fixes my problem with act one and/or that the Extended Cut is an uptick from this... that being said the only extended edition that was not an improvement over the theatrical cut IMO was Desolation Of Smaug.... I will also say that I am starting to question if Peter Jackson has anything left in the tank... Hobbit is OK overall but not even close to LOTR... AND his style is getting to be dated. We shall see.....

The Hobbit Trilogy has been a mixed bag. Mostly overstuffed, overly stylized, but with some fun scenes. Peter Jackson is barely able to keep his needlessly sprawling story together. It would literally take less time to read The Hobbit than to watch these three films. This final film is nothing more than a protracted battle sequence to wrap the three films up. It's thrilling at times, but it's mostly tedious. Bilbo as a character takes a backseat to all the action in the film and that's kind of a shame seeing how this series was supposed to be about his journey. Somewhere along the line, PJ forgot That The Hobbit in question was Bilbo and that these movies were supposed to be his story. He was clearly more interested in making a Lord of the Rings prequel than an adaptation of The Hobbit. All that said, none of these movies are without their moments and can be enjoyed for what they are.

I LOVED the LOTR Trilogy. I was really looking forward to the Hobbit Trilogy. I knew fairly early that this one would not measure up (for me) to the LOTR, but I wanted to see it through and thought that it might redeem itself by the end. Battle of the Five Armies was the weakest entry in any of the series and a disappointing entry in a disappointing trilogy. I bought the first one, felt like I had to buy the second one and REALLY didn't want to have an incomplete set by not buying the third one. I was wrong and I wished that I hadn't purchased it. I might watch this trilogy one more time ever, whereas I look forward to watching the LOTR trilogy many more times.Don't NOT watch this movie because of this review, but don't feel like you have to purchase the movie.

The completionist in me forced me to get this. I have the first two and didn't love them --though I did like two more than one--so I figured I'd get this too. My children want to see it and it's fair less intense at home than in the theater. Much of the criticism of the first two Hobbit films can be made here as well: it looks like a painting, the effects are incredible and it goes on way, way too long. I enjoy owning films like this, particularly in this format, so that my children and I can "skip around" to watch the parts we really want to see (i.e. the dragon death, etc) over and over again. The Blu-ray itself is beautiful. I haven't checked out the extra features on this one yet, but I'm sure they're as good as all the rest.

After suffering through the previous two films I felt obligated to see it to the end. As someone who has actually read the books I cannot stand to see how they were butchered to stretch into a trilogy. Honestly I expected it to be called "Hobbit 3: Revenge of Legolas". Things are so different from the book its borderline stupid. Why not just have Legolas get the ring and slay Smaug himself? I'm aware many love this series but I am not one of them. Watch this if only to tide yourself over for the inevitable Legolas trilogy.

Capping off the unnecessary 3 movie trilogy for the Hobbit story, The Battle of Five Armies is visually stunning in its 3d presentation. I'm a big fan of 3d, but I understand why other may not be. Usually I watch a film in 3d first for the depth of the visuals and then in standard 2d to concentrate more on details of the story. The Hobbit films are a cash grab that could easily have been trimmed into two movies. More stuff doesn't make a great film so because of this I'll say it's a good movie but not great.

Lord of the Rings and the subsequent Hobbit series are my all-time favorites. I fell in love with the characters in the first movie. I could hardly wait for this addition to the story. Sadly, most of the characters I love had been replaced. The story line was weak, and my heart wasn't able to bond with the characters. Having said that, the effects in bringing the creatures to life are masterful, as always. Someone new to the series probably wouldn't be disappointed.

The movie arrived in a sealed case. However, when opened, the movie DVD was not properly secured in the case. It was able to move around and possibly get scratched. It didn't and it played without any problems. Just kind of weird that the disc was not snapped into its place. This have never happened before with any disc I received in the mail. Could it have popped out during the shipping/handling process, maybe.

There are some problems here. The story suffers some under the weight of being blown up across 3 long movies. The title character's story gets lost a bit with the innumerable sub-plots. There are questions that are not clearly answered: Exactly who are the 5 armies? Plus, as with any prequel, there is a certain lack of tension: You already many key characters are going to live... However, with all of that said, Tolkien's Middle Earth is beautifully realized by Jackson as always. Plus Freeman, McKellen, and Armitage deliver standout performances.

I believe that this movie was not as good as the rest of the trilogy. There was action, but it appeared the director was milking it in this endeavor. After seeing this, I believe that he could have edited it together with Desolation of Smaug (Part 2) and still made a movie short enough to market. Trilogy movies derived from shorter stories (compared to Lord of the Rings) rarely can pull enough content to keep people interested for almost 8 hours of movie. All in all, this was only bought to finalize the trilogy on video, for us.

I liked the way Jackson tied in some LOTR background (e.g. having Legolas go looking for someone called Strider) but the battle scenes were just way too long and fake. The Hobbit was not a book about war but the movie almost seemed to be focused on it. The fights with the Orcs were just too repetitive. I thought Jackson did a good job, with a few exceptions, with LOTR. However in trying to stretch The Hobbit to 3 movies he had to add in too much of his/his wife's additions and they just aren't as good a storyteller as Tolkien.

As a Hobbit/Tolkien fan, I was a little disappointed with this movie. Several plot elements and characters could have been handled better. The pacing was totally different than the first movies; it spent too much time on certain plot elements and too little on others. There was room/time for more character development than what this movie gives us, and it leaves something to be desired. However, it is still worth watching if you have any interest in Tolkien's works or the LOTR franchise.

I got this blu Ray to complete my Lord Of the Rings collection, I was excited to see how the hobbit would end...on film. I m sorry to say that I was disappointed with how this trilogy ended, it was very anticlimactic for me. Maybe because this is now the 6th LOTR movie I've seen. It strait bored me in some of the sections in the film. The visuals are stunning but that's about it. Sorry

I have been a fan of The Hobbit for over 40 years and I loved the LOTR movies by Peter Jackson. I was very much looking forward to The Hobbit movies but have to say I have mixed feelings. The film work is great but the extended scenes solely for 3D affect and the extensive deviations from the book are disappointing. I recommend this with reservations. If you like a film with great action, you should enjoy this one. If you really loved the book, you might want to pass.

The movie could of been a simple 30 min film and it would of accomplish the same as this 2 hour plus. The battle scenes are long and sometimes just drags on. Still fun to watch but from all the films this I would consider the worst of them all due to the short/stretching of the movie length. Again it's still a fun movie but not in the same league as the rest. The ending didn't feel like an ending and it seem to be missing the depth of say LOTR: Return of the King did .

The journey is a good one, yet an over-long one at that. Watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy is longish as well. But kept us entertained and interested throughout. However, this is the factor holding back the Hobbit trilogy from really coming out as being anything great. It lacks that extra punch to keeps us going. Or interested in what's to happen next to these early characters. Good but certainly not great this time around.

The cliff-hanger from the 2nd film gets resolved very quickly and we're off in another direction. And another battle sequence. And another. This film trilogy padded the original story to the point where the story itself gets lost in all of the detours & distractions away from it. The extended edition expanded this further. Effects and graphics are impressive, but too much of this good thing did get tiresome after a while.

If you've seen the first 2 Hobbit movies, you know what you're getting into. This film, like the other 2, very loosely follows the book. While I did enjoy it for what it was, I didn't feel as satisfied as I was with Peter Jackson's previous run through Middle Earth. The changes he's made to this story feels more like a distraction than enhancement. If you like fantasy films and liked the first 2 films, then you will like this.

I enjoyed the first two installments of this series, but it seems that this one was a little rushed for my taste. (Example, the she-elf grieving for Kili is shown very briefly with no mention of what happened to her, etc). There was also an over-use of computer generated effects. I know this is a given for the director and these films, but it seemed more noticeable and less life-like than his previous films.
