A: You'll want to make sure you have the correct cable. The white USB C charger cable included with Macs do not support data transfer for monitors. You'll need a thunderbolt 3 cable or a USB C cable that supports data transfers for monitors ( you can tell its the right one if the cable is pretty thick and the USB C cable part is also thick and longer ( about an inch). I was shocked when my MacBooks cable did not work and had to try a different USB C cable I use with my external HDD.
Q: does the monitor support 2 separte inputs
A: I currently have a USB-C connected to my MacBook and an HDMI to my work laptop. I just have to toggle between the inputs in the menu to switch.
