A fridge on the other hand would probably be way more than a full load, or maximum power capacity so it probably wouldn't power a fridge at all during a power outage. But it would protect it from a surge or a short.

A:AnswerNo, it is not normal. Perhaps your battery cell capacity has deteriorated and is not holding sufficient battery power to provide peak energy consumption. I would recommend either replace the battery cell or upgrade to a higher rating UPS. The latter is preferred.
