Self install-AI to analyze water use, catch leaks

The Phyn Smart Water Assistant is a more affordable option than their Phyn Plus model, but keep in mind that this unit cannot shot off the water supply. It will over time analyze your water use and notify you via its app of possible water leaks. Installation is recommended under the kitchen sink where typically an AC outlet exists. The unit is then connected to the hot and cold water lines. If you’re like most people it will take a bit of time to do once one clears out all the stuff underneath the sink to access the water lines and outlet. Phyn does have support resources of installation videos and FAQs at phyn.com should one need additional assistance. Since the Phyn SWA uses artificial intelligence to learn your water use over time it does take involvement by the user to help it understand the sources of that use. If you’re a consumer buying this to hopefully conserve water use it will take time to review the results via app and to help Phyn train itself to learn what valves are identified with a particular water use. For example, Phyn may need your help to understand that automatic water filler on your swimming pool is running versus an outdoor hose spigot. Given the fact that it will take time for Phyn to get trained on our water use it is hard to say at this time how good the results will be for us. This will be dependent on the time we spend via the app to review the results and relabel water use to the correct source as needed. If you’re diligent when it comes to the use of a product app then Phyn has the potential to pay for itself as it assists the homeowner in understanding the sources of their water use. Given the cost of repairing damage done by water leaks consideration should be given to stepping up to the Phyn Plus unit that has the ability to automatically shut off the water supply should an emergency develop. Yes, the price is steeper, but home repairs for water damage can be quite costly.

Adding water use awareness to your smart home sink

I've had a number of smart home devices in use for a while now, garage door, lights, door sensors, etc. This was my first "passive" device where I intend for it to go unnoticed unless there's a problem. The Phyn smart water assistant is definitely leading the pack on the design and accessibility of these products. Basic plumbing knowledge is all that is needed, and the two included sensors install easily and are low profile and went in quickly. I rated this product 4 stars as I had larger diameter plumbing where I wanted to use the smart water sensors, and it baffles m why they wouldn't make these 1/2' instead of 3/8". I ended up having to change the way they were installed to keep from reducing my available water volume. The connection to wifi is simple and quick. The app is free and connected to their service is free. This is one area they were knocking it out of the park for me. I despise paying for additional services to monitor hardware I've just purchased. Overall this product is well made, installs well, and if you're specifically looking for a sink sensor, I would highly recommend it. I would also recommend you spend some time thinking/researching whole-house monitoring, which Phyn also makes.

    Poor Customer service!

I purchased the 2nd gen Phyn device (after my first one stopped working six months out of ) and the new one didn’t work. After phone calls with their tech group, they determined that the flow sensor was bad. After that they said they would create a ticket… Multiple phone calls over two weeks… no one has called me back, no response when calling them as no one can tell me if they’re going to replace it … and or when they’re going to replace it. For all intensive purposes, I purchased a 2nd gen $400+ brick… or at least till i hear back…

    Leak detector extraordinaire!

I must admit that I was skeptical that a device placed under my kitchen sink could detect abnormal water flow anywhere in my house. I then had a conversation with my 85 year old uncle, who was a master plumber for 50 years, and he said, "I bet it uses sound or vibration. that's how I used to know if there was a leak, I'd listen to the faucet. I could hear the leak and tell if it was on the hot side or the cold side of the system. Of course, it was easier back when the faucets had two handles, it's harder with these single handle faucets we have today." Based on his words, I installed the device. Installation was super simple. Download the PHYN app from the App Store or Google Play store and follow the instructions. It was just a matter of connecting the unit to WiFi, then installing one sensor on the hot stop and one on the cold stop under the kitchen sink, mount the PHYN box nearby, plug in the power adapter, and plug a single connector into the PHYN box. Took me less than 20 minutes. You must have an un-switched power outlet under the sink to power the unit. Once installed, there is a quick calibration and some basic information to be entered (numbers and types of plumbing fixtures), also accomplished via the app, and you're done. Once installed and calibrated, I gave it a few ours to learn a little about how we use water, because the goal is to detect abnormal water flow. When flow is sensed, the app will ask questions like, "At 8:20 this morning there was water flow for 30 minutes of approximately 50 gallons. Do you know what that was?" It was my wife taking a "Hollywood" shower in our master bath stand-alone shower, so I simply checked "Shower Only," and PHYN remembers the characteristics of that flow. It then logs every water event, which device was used, and the gallons consumed. In logging these events, it learns, for instance, how long each toilet tank normally requires to fill. as it builds a bigger and bigger database of normal events, it knows more precisely when an event is abnormal. While the system hasn't really had adequate time to collect good baseline data, I still wanted to provide an abnormal scenario, so I wedged a toilet flapper valve slightly open with a small bit of wood. In about 20 minutes, I received a text message alert from PHYN telling me that I had an abnormal flow. I then removed the wood, and about five minutes later received a text message stating the abnormal flow was resolved. I can only imagine that messages will come more quickly and precisely as PHYN has compiled a larger and larger set of baseline data. As an added bonus, PHYN tracks water usage and allows you to compare current month to date to previous months, and see where you are. I haven't had it installed long enough to review that feature, but I am interested to see it in action. At $300, the PHYN Smart Water Assistant will pay for itself the first time it detects a leak which, if left uncorrected, might cause substantial damage to a home. Also, the PHYN app will generate a proof of installation to be used in request a discount on homeowner's insurance, so it might pay for itself even more quickly. I really like this device, and hope it will protect my home for many years to come. The data it collects is just a nice bonus.

The Phyn - Smart Water Assistant is an awesome utility for staying informed on water consumption and plumbing functionality in your home. Never worry about unknown leaks or water pressure issues. Thanks to the Phyn Smart Water Assistant you can be alerted of any anomalies with your plumbing system. I plan to get a few more for other areas of the home. It's a really wonderful tool to have in your belt. The smart water assistant is easy to set up. It comes with everything you need right in the box. The coolest part of this system is the integration options with other IoT devices. You can retrieve information about your water consumption with recognized voice prompts which is really amazing. I highly recommend the Phyn - Smart Water Assistant.

After hooking the Phyn Smart Water Assistant up and knowing what to expect with the learning process, I have given it 3 weeks to "learn" and it still shows nothing that it promotes. The one thing I can say is the packing was great, everything organized perfectly. The instructions are average and the install was overly time consuming and I am very handy with tools. The Teflon tape that was included was crap, it did not seal great so I used some I already had. Mounting the box was simple but power was a small issue as I did not have an outlet close under my sink. The smart part of this unit is still "learning" i guess, I can see water usage for my sink basically but whole home is nowhere close to what my water meter shows. Until they improve the way the software works, this is basically useless for myself and my smart home.

The system installed without a problem; I had an outlet for the dishwasher. I had a hard time hooking up to the internet, and finally got it connected. Downloading the app was with out problems, getting the app to talk to the unit was a different matter. Overall I am not happy with this unit.

With water being a costly utility, why not let technology help you save money! Leaks happen, but when you usually find out about them is after you notice damage or you get the dreaded bill that is skykigh and you have no clue how it happened. Enter- Phyn the smart water assistant. This device took me a little bit to get in place in my kitchen. Simple enough to get the app synced to and get it going! It needs a few days to gather data and get to know your setup, so I noticed accurate information after a few days. I loved being able to to see how much water I was wasting by simple everyday activities. Now that I am aware I can save money in real time!

My Phyn saved me the first day

The Phyn was easy to install and immediately identified a problem with my Pressure Regulating Valve that had gone out and was causing too much pressure from the street that was damaging all my plumbing. The system correctly identified the problem and even helped me find a plumber who came out the next day and replaced the valve. The system gradually learns your plumbing over time and the more you help teach it, the better it gets.

Installation was tricky and took outlet under sink, I am already over capacity with electric faucet, dishwasher, garbage disposal. It took quite a few resets of the hardware to finish installation with it reading hot water. So far have some readings but it will take 3-4 weeks per the instructions to train this on all my water sources. Will be good to know if I have a leak or how much water we use.

    XFINITY USERS BEWARE!

XFINITY USERS BEWARE! The Phyn Plus I've had for 36 days has had numerous connectivity issues with my Xfinity Wi-Fi. I've spent hours and hours with the Phyn Support team who has refused to engage in troubleshooting with my Xfinity Tier-3 representative. I have numerous home devices that are connected to my Xfinity Wi-Fi just fine. Instead of the Phyn software development team working with one of the largest national cable Internet companies, Phyn Support blames Xfinity, and Xfinity blames Phyn. My request for a refund has been denied, having the unit for slightly over the 30-day refund period... REASON = XFINITY ISSUE. I now have a useless, expensive $800+ manual and difficult shutoff valve! I'll also intend to file a complaint with Better Business Bureau. If you are an XFINITY Wi-Fi user, run from this product... Buyer Beware!!

Stops sending data, no tech support

Mine died after 30 months of use. Customer service/tech support was not interested in doing any troubleshooting after they learned it was a few months beyond the amazing two year warranty. The unit boots, displays lights, joins my network, but will not send data. The only thing tech support is interested in was selling me another. It’s amazing that I could pull my old WRT54G router out of a box and it still works 20 years later, but this $300 meter can’t last three years. For shame Phyn.

Almost impossible to find anyone who can install it in my area and for those that can they charge over $1K. Customer service is no help whatsoever and their refund policy is a joke.
