QuestionPC owners report that their actual usable capacity is only 10.9 TB. When reformatted for mac, do you get the full 12TB?
- Answer The size difference is not caused by formatting but because of the definition of Terabyte that hard drive manufacturers use (1000 gigabytes) vs what most operating systems do (1024 gigabytes). What Windows reports is actually in Tebibyte and not Terabytes. So you haven't actually lost any space at all, the OS is just giving you a different number. It is very confusing for consumers though and I wish OS makers and hard drive manufacturers would both agree to one definition and stick with it.
QuestionHow many pictures can this hold
- Answer It can probably hold about 800-1000 blu ray movies on it, which are thousands to millions of times larger than a picture so I wouldn't expect picture storage to even be a concern. The drive would probably go bad before you could ever fill it up to be honest.
QuestionCan this drive be partitioned with each partition having a different file systems? Does this drive come with the software to do?
- Answer Yes and Yes, the drive comes with WD software, however you can go into control panel, administrative tools, computer management, Storage and then Disk Management and you will se the 12TB drive there. All you need to do then is delete the volume and then create volumes in whatever sizes you deem appropriate for your needs, then right click on the volume on the right side of the panel and it will present you with formatting options. I am not sure why you would want to do this but if it is what you want to do then go for it. My only recommendation is that you purchase 2 drives when dealing with 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 or now even the 16TB drives as they do have a much higher failure rate then drives did 8-10 years ago, after all you must sacrifice something for all that storage at a cheaper price so to ensure you don't lose your data, buy two and clone the drives every other month or quarterly to keep a rolling back up, that is my recommendation and as someone that has worked in IT and telecom for 32+ years I would say I have a pretty vast array of knowledge to draw from be it the 7 years I worked for a system manufacture, or the 6 years I ran a call center for a major ISP including dealing with the NOC and the Data Center there or to the 7 years I spent as a Network Administrator and Engineer as well as Facilities manager, just to give some insight into my real world experiences, you can never have enough backups. hope that helps
QuestionCan I connect this external hard drive to a laptop for external storage or is this a desktop exclusive external hard drive?
- Answer As long as your computer has the appropriate USB connection, it’ll work. There’s no such thing as a desktop-only or laptop-only external drive. Maybe you’re confusing with internal drives, which ARE for desktops only (though you could put one in an enclosure and connect to a laptop).
QuestionWould it work on my Xbox one
- Answer Yes, it will work. I have a 12tb for my Xbox One and works great.
QuestionIs this PMR?Or is it SMR?
- Answer Both the EMAZ and EMFZ drives are PMR. Interestingly, there is evidence that the EMFZ is actually a 14TB capacity drive with 12TB firmware - presumably due to binning.
QuestionCan I daisy chain this drive to another external hard drive using USB 3.0?
- Answer No, but I use a usb hub to connect multiple drives, works fine
QuestionWill the NSA monitor the Word documents that I store on this drive? I'm a writer and am told the NSA records every keystroke? Can I turn off the Internet from my computer box thing somehow? How does one turn off internet without turning off house's power?
- Answer Unplug your computer from everything. Use in airplane mode. Remember there is no such thing as permanently "deleted items". Option 2: Live life without electronic devices like Television, cell phones, computers, home security systems, or a recent model vehicle ALL are monitoring you. Do not use "Fit Bit" personnel "health" monitoring either. LIVE FREE FROM TECHNOLOGY it has been done for thousands of years!
Questionis drive lockable with password, or accessible to anyone?
- Answer This drive is not “lockable” . It has no password encryption, which I was not aware of when I purchased it. You simply plug it into a USB port and it is accessible. Which of course means anyone who might take the drive can simply plug it in and access all the data on the drive. I had also purchased a “my book “ drive a couple weeks earlier which is password encrypted, which I prefer but is a little more expensive.
QuestionGuys my boyfriend says he wants a new hard drive and I'm looking at this one and thinking if its a good Christmas gift? I guess he is using this for his Xbox so will it work good with it?
- Answer The Xbox One will support up to 16TB of external storage so yes, would be a good choice.
QuestionAnyone shucked one of these and find any differences to the previous model? Curious if they are still good for use in NAS devices.
- Answer I recently purchased 5 of these and shucked them for use in a new NAS. Every drive was a WD White label drive. They are currently installed in my NAS and everything is working properly.

QuestionThe drive is making a hitting noice coming from inside the drive. It’s not a scratching or screeching noice. It more like a light hitting noice coming from inside the case. Is this normal or should I get a replacement?
- Answer Open up your case and pinpoint exactly where the noise is coming from. If it is really coming from the drive, get a replacement right away. Dont wait too long before it gets worst. Remember to backup your files. Any louder noise than normal coming from a hdd is not normal.
QuestionCan this be a networked drive accessible from multiple machines on same WiFi?

QuestionIs this external hdd compatible with PS5?
- Answer Hi Luis, Sony added support for external USB hard drives on the PS5 with their April 2021 update. However, due to PS5 restrictions, games can only be played off the console’s internal SSD. As such, external USB storage hard drives only function as a faster way to hot-swap games and data on or off the PS5’s internal storage. -Need Help? Please see our "'Contact Us" page for information
QuestionI'm a musician using it as part of a recording studio...how many songs can I store on it?
- Answer This is a difficult question to answer. What format are you storing your recordings. FLAC, WAV, other uncompressed format or a compressed format such as mp3? There are so many variations of compression and how much they actually compress each individual recording. So you are asking a question that is very difficult to give a precise number. Unless you are recording everyday … Multiple versions or takes and not using compression you will have plenty of space for years to come. Most likely the drive will die long before you have it filled. Wav file 10.1Mb per minute approximately. Uncompressed so 12TB (12,000,000,000) 1.2 trillion minutes of music/ 20,000,000 hours of music / 833,333.3 days of music. No matter what always plan for a backup as well. Compression will double or better the amount. You are looking at lots of storage.
QuestionIs this one work with my PS4?
- Answer No. It will not work with either the PS4 or the PS5. Both have a maximum capacity of 8 TB.
QuestionCould this be used in a Raid configuration?
- Answer Do you plan on shucking the drive(s)? If yes, then. Is your system raid compatible? If yes, then. How many drives do you have? If more than two, then yes. If answers are yes; then yes it can be used in raid. Raid is set by either a raid controller at a hardware level or by the operating system; and not by storage device.
