Ideal UPS Backup Solution-DVR, Modem and Router

I was looking for a reasonably lightweight UPS that would back up my DVR, Cable Modem and Wi-Fi Router in the event of a power failure. I was replacing a Tripp Lite UPS that had failed. I wanted a lighter UPS than the Tripp Lite as it sits in my TV cabinet and I keep adding equipment. Most UPSs weigh more than 25 pounds and this one weighs only 10--perfect. It has several 6 outlets for backup and surge protection and another 3 outlets for surge only. I am only backing up the 3 items noted, the rest, including my TV are plugged into the surge only outlets. The manual states that this UPS would backup a modem and router for about 6 hours, which is great. Having the DVR attached will reduce this time, although I don't know how much. If home when the power failure occurs, I will disconnect my DVR if I know nothing is being recorded--that gives me 6 hours of Wi-Fi to help me from "suffering" through the power failure. I also wanted a new model and this model fitted the bill perfectly-- first made available to consumers in September 2016! This unit has a 3 year warranty and products made by APC are outstanding! I have bought and used several APC products in my lifetime! I identified the specific product I wanted on line and once I decided the UPS I wanted, I checked the Best Buy website, noted it was in stock at my closest Best Buy store (Bloomingdale, IL), then went to the store and bought it--a ten minute process!

Very Good for PS4 in Rest or Play Modes

Due to numerous power blips (i.e. losses of AC power for one second or less) which occur frequently in my area, I lost a the 2TB SSHD in my PS4. This required a new drive as well aa reloading all the games, restoring what saved data I could from the cloud, restoring all my PS4 settings, and so on. This was a lot of trouble and time that I didn't want to repeat. So, I thought that I better get a UPS for the PS4 so that I could continue to use Rest Mode (which is required for automatically uploading of the saved data to the web because I have never been able to do that manually for reasons that I don't yet understand). This unit has enough capacity to sustain the PS4 and other devices during the power blips even when actively playing as well as when in Rest Mode. I no longer worry about this and have had no problems since. As is typical, this unit has some of its outlets spaced for accommodating the wall warts used by many devices. The price, performance, and reputation together resulted in my decision to go with this unit. Using it as I am is very simple and intuitive, and it appears to be well made..

    Poor choice for a UPS

I usually purchase APC brand UPS (uninterruptible power supply) units for home office or small business office setup. I've been using this brand for 20 years or so and never had an issue until now with this specific model. Purchased it new, connected the battery, plugged it in to let it power up and start the charging cycle. The next day I heard constant beeping noises that you usually hear when the battery is going bad. sure enough the battery was bad so we took it back to Best Buy for an exchange. Oddly the same thing happened with the exchange units so it could be a defective product. In total, we purchased 2 units and exchanged those 2 units twice so in all we tried 6 units at three different Best Buy stores. All units had the same problem. I ended up using a different retailer and a different brand UPS battery backup with no issues. I gave it one start because I had to otherwise I would not give it any stars. I could not recommend this product based on my experience.

I chose this UPS because you just can't beat the legendary reliability of APC (American Power Conversion). In my professional career I gained much experience with products manufactured by APC. It just seemed natural to want the same quality and dependability at home, the second unit that I have owned. This UPS offers a generous, higher than most, amp hour battery which equates to longer run time when the power is out. Plenty of outlets are provided, some with wide spacing for plug in power cube supplies. This means that adjacent outlets are not covered by these bulky cubes. Also there are 3 outlets, not connected to back up power for less critical devices. But they are surge suppressor protected. Sensitive electronics are protected by this feature. There are ample outlets eliminating the need for additional power strips. Also there is a LED indicator that your home supply power is proper, no faults present like a missing ground connection. For Windows users, Power Shute software is provided along with an interconnecting cable to your computer to safely automatically power down your machine so your data is preserved. In summary: this is a fine quality UPS with a large capacity battery at a very affordable price point with a great warranty.

    Returning it

I have 3 other APC backups - my oldest one started clicking so I decided to replace it with this newer design. I have been pleased in the past, but my experience with THIS model was enough that I am returning it this morning and taking the time to review it. Plugging it in, the light blinks - I assume initially it is charging. Hook it up to my computer - the PowerChute program tells me it is working off of battery backup. Researching the blinking light in the paperwork, the pattern is also telling me that it is working off the battery backup. The surge protector portion of the unit worked perfectly fine which tells me it's getting electricity, right? I unplug everything - charge it for over 20 hours - it still blinks (meaning, it's still working off of battery backup) only this morning, the battery is near dead. This sounded enough like TomNC's problem (review on 11/15/16) that I fear it may be a model issue or a bad batch which is why I am taking the time to review it at all - so improvements can be made. Like TomNC, I could not find a 800# to call until I saw his review and APC's response, but the unit is packed back up to be returned. Would have been nice to have that number on the paperwork. I will not be considering this newer design for the replacement.

First blip on the power line and it turns the power off to everything plugged into it. The alarm sounds but it does not go to battery backup. If I push the button to kill the alarm and then push it again it comes back on.It has done this 3 times in the past two weeks. The "battery backup" function does not kick in Now, if I simply unplug it while operating it works fine and the battery backup function kicks it. Apparently it does not like blips or fluctuations. Of course it did this 10 days after the Best Buy return period. I will not spend the time or money to box this thing up and ship it back to APC. I will save the battery as a spare for one of my other APC products and this thing is going in the dumpster. DO NOT waste your money on this defective design. There was a reason it was on sale.

Thank you for taking the time to review our UPS. I am sorry to hear to that you are having issues with our UPS. The unit would protect you during small power blimps like you are having. I would try disconnecting the power cord and internal battery then hold the power button for around 10 seconds. Once this done reconnect the internal battery and power cable then turn that the unit back on. If this does not clear up the issue please reach out to an APCbySchneider support team. This unit would come with a 3 year manufactures warranty. We offer email and chat services through our support site. For the fastest service visit our chat at https://www.apc.com/us/en/tools/chat/. After owning this for only 10 days, I turned on for the first time a printer that was plugged into the "Surge and Battery" portion of the UPS. Suddenly, the entire UPS shut down, causing the computer and monitor to shut down as well. Then the thing began beeping loudly and frequently. I got the beeping to stop somehow, and then I tried the same thing again. Same thing happened. In otrher words, the UPS caused my computer to turn off rather than stopping it from turning off! Then I plugged the printer into the "Surge" portion of the UPS, and tried turning it on again. This time, the printer came on, and the computer and monitor stayed on. Now, I have only two devices plugged into the "Surge and Battery" portion -- the computer and the monitor. I don't have the guts to test the thing by turning off a circuit breaker. I have no trust in this device. I have not called tech support because my overall experience with tech support in general is that it's better for one's blood pressure to regard money as being thrown away rather than try to return things, etc. etc.

Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. We apologize for any inconvenience or frustration this situation caused. We do not typically recommend connecting printers to the battery connected outlets, for the exact reason you described. Printers will draw so much more power when first powered on and while printing, that it can be easy to overload the UPS. I also apologize for any negative experience you have had with our support teams. We do have a dedicated team available you may contact directly at esupport@apc.com. This team provides the best possible customer service experience and can definitely help further troubleshoot this issue if need be. APC

It’s a great concept item if it worked. Everything but large kitchen items are connected to surge protectors.better safe then sorry. According to apc support I’m aloud to connect this unit to a surge protector, so I did. Everything worked fine untill we had a good thunderstorm and the lights just flickered for a split second. The unit starts beeping pretty loud. The reset isn’t blown and the only thing connected to the battery back up unit is a PS4, a modem and router. And yet the unit fried while connected to a rocket fish surge protector of 4800+ jolts That’s also connected to a in wall surge Protector that will handle 5280 jolts. I got the back up surge only to keep my internet running if power went out and to keep my PS4 from randomly restarting with a power flicker so no damage to the system. And the battery unit fried with a flicker that did not even shut off my tv or reset any of the clocks in the kitchen like the oven. If you read this far. Buy a different brand.

I switched back to APC due to price/wattage rating when my old(other brand) UPS died after 5 years of service. I purchased the Backups 900 BN900M for 99.99.. Hooked everything up and it worked...for 33 days. Now its beyond the return date and I will have to try to get a warranty claim from APC. From reading their website it looks like I will also be on the hook for shipping my 33 day old unit back to them to receive a "refurbished" unit back... so after spending 106.99 with tax and not sure how much shipping will be but its heavy with the battery this bargain is turning out to be not such a great deal. Hopefully if and when I get a replacement back...which Im sure wont be very quick leaving me with no backup power supply for my home phone and internet...It will last longer than a month...guess I should have stayed with the other brand..few dollars more but lasted years.. not a month.

I ordered this January 3, 2018, and as of May 23, 2018, it is dead. I went to the APC website, but you cannot order a new battery for it currently, which, to me, infers there was an inherent problem with the unit. I have at least 8 active APC units (earlier models) in my house, and the batteries typically last 3-5 years. I have tried unplugging all devices from the unit, unplugging the unit, the battery and the 5 second reset. The end result is always the same: the power button flashes green a few seconds, then goes off and then it emits a continuous, solid beeeeeeeep. I will check into using the warranty, and if it is cost effective to UPS the unit back for service. I haven't found the APC website particularly easy to navigate, and it does not have weekend or extended contact times. I will still purchase APC back-ups in the future, but I will avoid this model for a year or two!

From what I've gathered from other reviews, this unit is defective and seems to fail anywhere from a few days to (like mine) a year after purchase. My unit is exhibiting the same issues that other have described. The surge protection outlets will function but, the battery back-up outlets will not. While my unit is reporting that the battery is fully charged, the unit will continue to blink the green LED for 5 seconds and then shutdown with a loud prolonged beep. The powerchute software is unable to run the "self-test" and gives no helpful information as to why. The unit worked fine until its random failure. I believe that there is an at large problem with these units and APC should refund/exchange the units that have made it to customer hands.

I purchased this UPS because it was inexpensive. I realized that it has many problems. I use it to power my computer and monitor (28" Samsung 4K monitor and Ryzen 7 + GTX 1080 PC). When on battery, the UPS releases a large amount of electromagnetic interference which can interfere with electronics. The power is also very unstable. The voltage fluctuates between 90 and 150 volts. The output is also not sinusoidal, as it is a stepped square wave. When the power draw from the UPS exceeds around 300 watts, the control circuit will glitch out. Sometimes my PC will randomly shut down, other times APC PowerChute displays weird errors and crashes. Overall I would not recommend this UPS. Sure, it is slim and light, but other than that, it is overall terrible.

Thank you for inquiry. I am sorry to hear about the issues you are having with our unit. Unfortunately it sounds like like the UPS may be too small to support your computer and monitor. I would double check the power draw of your power supply in your computer because usually they require around a 600 watt power for the GTX 1080 video card. The UPS is likely becoming overloaded since it only supports around 480 watts of equipment connected to it. Like you mentioned the unit is a step approximated sine wave so depending on the meter you use you will see the voltage fluctuations. If you weren't true RMS voltmeter then you can see low voltage. You can reference our knowledge base article FA157483 for more information on this. I recommend considered our BackUPS Pro line since this would support more equipment and give you pure sine wave while on battery. Something like our BN1500M2 would work best. Please do not hesitate to reach out to an APCbySchneider sales team if you need further assistance in selected an UPS. Form & function of this new design worked seemlessly for my application of equipping an Av cart for my sons new TV and game system. New top plug location and full horizontal layput fit a traditional powerstrip layout and make connection easier, The battery in the bottom keeps the orienation solid on the cart. APC seems to be updating their line to meet these new home use cases previously only found in business applications. It will be interesting to see if the durability is still there or if it is designed to fail after a few years. Ut woukd have been nice to have more secure points built in as part if the design. I had to zip tie around the unit, but the was plug soacing midway that allowed for this without covering outlets.

Consulted recently for a small office where the internet connection would sometimes drop and the PBX (phone) system would periodically crash. It turned out that the electrical system in the old building had its shares of brown-outs and spikes when a copier, microwave oven, vacuum cleaner or refrigerator would turn on or off. After connecting the cable modem for internet access, the router, and PBX to this APC Back-UPS these interruptions no longer happened. In addition, I connected the UPS to a computer running (free from APC) monitoring software with the supplied USB cable so the UPS could be monitored. In smaller offices in older buildings, power quality issues are often overlooked even though they negatively impact office work. Installing this Back-UPS is a relatively low-cost method to keep communications running reliably.

I gave this a 4-star rating only because it's too soon to know if it deserved 5 stars or not. Since buying it, we have had one, 10-minute power outage and the battery back-up did it's job. I have a fairly high-end computer plugged into it, but it spends most of its time in sleep mode, so I did not need a huge UPS sized to run the computer system for an hour. Mostly I wanted to survive the 5-second power drops we often get when it storms to minimize potential damage due to power fluctuations. After thinking about this for a long time, I decided I would much rather spend some money to protect my expensive computer system, than regret not doing it. It would be way to painful to have a dead motherboard, knowing how many times I considered getting a UPS to avoid power surges, brownouts, and power drops.

Bought this unit for support in case of power failure during Hurricane Michael. Charged for over 20 Hrs. Hooked up network and router. Power failed and it worked OK then. Now, at 35 days, it is constantly clicking on-and-off battery power, and will not stop. Battery does backup and does not drop out, but the clicking is getting worse. Going to try to get a new one - - it is past "return-to-seller" date, so will have to see if APC swap for a new one. VERY VERY disappointed. Have used APC UPS at home and at office many many years. If this one is not made right, I will never buy another APC unit, at home or in my role as IT specialist at my plant.

It worked perfectly for 7 days but then started going off every 8 hours. I would take out all the plugs that I had in it and let it recharge and then it would work ok for day or so but then would start beeping. (I never had a power outage or power surge) Finally it would not charge at all. I thought it could be the battery but I had had it only for 2 weeks and the battery should not fail that quickly so I looked at the instructions and it did not give me a telephone number, only a web site (Well when you canit work your computer how do you get in touch with them!!!!!!) I've used APC back-up systems for two decades and keep coming back to them because I have never had any problems with them. This is the sixth unit I have purchased and four of those six are still in service. They are reliable, do what they claim and mainly sit there quietly protecting sensitive electronic equipment. Besides having three computers and monitors attached to these units, I have separate units for my phones, modems, external hard drives and other equipment that could be harmed by a surge and that I might be using during a power outage. By buying oversized units, I can run the equipment longer before having to power down.

This UPS upped and died on me less than 2 months after I bought it. I found it emitting a constant alarm tone and wouldn't turn on without emitting the tone. I have no idea why and there was nothing I could do to get it working again. The only option I didn't try was buying a new battery for it. But seeing as how they cost nearly half of what a new UPS costs, and there was no guarantee that it would even fix my problem, I decided to just get a different UPS. I'd like to get into more detail but that's all there is. One day it was working; the next it wasn't. Hardly confidence inspiring.

Provides battery backup and surge protection for 5 devices, and surge protection alone for 3 additional devices (the fewer the devices plugged in, the more time you have to rescue your files/equipment). I have router, modem, desktop, laptop, printer, two tablets and a phone (not all connected at once, although that would be possible). The only negative for me is the bright green glow from the power indicator, which Is as bright as a stobe at night and needs to be covered if I am to sleep. So far, no power surges or interruptions, so I can't comment on how it performs, but I'll bet the alarm will wake the dead. The unit is not too large for what it does, and the price is affordable. Users manual unerstandable. Nice!
