Do you have children and pets? Are you constantly fighting dirt and animal dander? I used to yell at my kids every saturday to get them to help clean the floors, not anymore!!! Now we have “Linda” the magical cleaning Robot. All we have to do is stop her periodically and empty the bin and clean out the beater bar, which to me is a fair trade in a 2000 sqft house. She runs every day. She rarely gets stuck under furniture. All we have to clean is baseboards and hard to reach nooks and crannies. It’s been a life saver for us. I just wish I had two. It has also helped with the kids keeping things off the floor! She got tangled in a shoelace once, but you can’t blame her! Robot for the win! If you can afford the self emptying one, go for it.

My wife wanted one, I thought it was stupid. So we settled and I bought her one. We went with this shark, because we have a shark vacuum, and it was cheap. Get it home, set it up, and off it goes. We did have to rearrange a few pieces of furniture to keep it from getting stuck, but after that it’s been awesome! You won’t believe how much dirt and dust it picks up. It’s insane. And even leaves the nice stripes in the carpet like a regular vacuum. It’s genius really, I wish we would of got one sooner. You will not be disappointed. Just buy it. Your welcome.

The Shark is a great product. I was so skeptical to purchase, but am greatly surprised. It works like a charm, helps me to save time, cleans dirt I couldn't see on the carpet, and finds the base after.

Great Robot Vacuum but Keep Your Old Vac Handy

The Shark ION Robot Vacuum R76 with Wi-Fi has many great features and cleans well for a semi-autonomous device. It has about an hour of battery which doesn’t sound like much but in my 2600 square foot home (it only covers one floor at a time), it gets through most if not all of it in that time although I am not sure if it gets 100% coverage. It can mostly be left to its own devices if you set up the schedule and I can see when mine has been out and about from the little tire marks in the carpeted rooms. The Shark has a small dust canister but I’ve yet to fill it in a day and it is easy to remove from the vacuum although I had hoped for an easier method to open the canister to empty – it’s a pinch-and-hope-it opens method which is simple but not as effective as it probably could be. The brush roll appears to work well without over brushing the carpet or rugs. The sweepers at the front also work well to push debris into the path of the vacuum so it can be collected as the Shark ION passes over it. I am not sure about the robot’s logic in terms of what path to take but it does mostly work. It can certainly look very random although sometimes when it sets out, it appears to know where it wants to at least start and then depending on what it bumps into can dictate where it actually goes next as it will not only maneuver around objects but also go off to different areas as it changes direction. More expensive robots will map the rooms so you could literally send them to clean a room, which they will do in a very methodical, almost like mowing-lawn-manner. This robot is not as sophisticated so it is a bit more hit-and-miss but in its way, it is still fairly effective. I don’t know what its logic is set to but it does appear to measure how far it is from objects it has bumped into and uses this information to navigate and find new areas to clean. I had a gripe in terms of docking but I seem to have figured it out now. I noticed at first that my Shark ION would happily clean for an hour or so and then I would get an error message on my phone saying the cliff sensors were blocked. I would come home and find the robot vac not quite up on the charger. If you backed it up (use the phone app to send it out to clean again and then tell it to dock) it would try again and successfully dock and start charging. I noticed that if you moved the dock a bit, it had a higher success rate so I think what happened was I put the dock on a bit of wood floor that was uneven and it somehow threw the robot’s sensors off. Anyway, if you encounter this, just move the dock slightly as it can make quite the difference. I did not have any problem when I moved the dock upstairs and used it on a carpeted area, just the wood floor in my kitchen where the dock normally resides. It is quite entertaining to watch the robot vacuum do its thing and we have often just fired it up to see it in action. It is quiet and you can easily watch TV at a normal volume without it disturbing things. The Shark ION is very impressive when upstairs and navigating around the stairs. The cliff sensors make sure it does not tumble down the stairs, potentially fatal for the vacuum, and I watched it carefully move around in that vicinity while trying to get to its dock nearby. It slowed it down a little as it had less room to maneuver but never came close to falling off. I love how it can get to spots I never can with my other vacuum cleaners – it will go under beds, tables, couches and many other places and we had no problems with it dealing with tall rugs, low hanging bed spreads etc. and it was even able to climb over a ring beneath a metal table and vacuum under there. It will sometimes have to work a bit to bump its way out of tight spots but seems to figure it out relatively quickly. We have only seen it have one (very minor) disaster so far where we accidentally left a phone charging cable out. It pulled it into the rotating brush roll and stopped before it wound all the way round. We found it under a couch where the cable had been plugged in. Side note that if you can’t find the vacuum, you can press a button in the Shark app and the robot will beep at you to let you know where it can be found – very useful in this case. We retrieved it, got the cable out easily and it was all set to go back to cleaning or head back to the dock to charge. Speaking of docking, the robot takes about 3 hours or so to charge up to 100% and will run for around an hour before heading back to the dock to recharge. I think it still has about 50% or so charge left after an hour but it is probably playing it safe to leave enough charge to locate a charger that might be some distance away. It appears to hunt for a signal that is coming from the dock in line of sight so it may need to move quite a way, in a random fashion, to find the line-of-sight signal. Once it does locate it, you see it slow down and start to line up with the dock and it is quite impressive to watch it find it from way across the house and then roll in to dock. It will play a happy little tune when it successfully docks and starts charging and also plays tunes when it starts cleaning or is heading back to the dock. I like that you can control the Shark ION from the app as well as its onboard buttons. Sometimes you just want it to start cleaning and not have to find the phone to start it. It is also possible to use voice control if you set it up for Google Assistant or Alexa but I haven’t felt the need for that yet. In terms of power and durability, we found a small sock in the dust canister today which it must have sucked up yesterday on one of its runs. I would have expected it to stall with that in the works but it had pushed it half into the canister, continued cleaning and then gone back to the dock when the charge ran low. Not something we want to repeat but impressive that it did not slow it down. I would certainly recommend following Shark’s suggestions to make sure the spaces you want it to clean are clear of anything that could cause it problems. There are just two adults in our home and no children’s toys or pets and their accessories, so we are a fairly easy home for a robot vacuum. You can use the supplied magnetic barrier strips to dissuade the robot from visiting certain areas but we did not feel we needed to use them as most of our spaces are clear anyway. All in all, we find the Shark ION a welcome addition to our home, when used to maintain the floors through the week. I will continue to vacuum the floors with a conventional vacuum on weekends as we still notice that the Shark can’t seem to pull out material that is in the carpet fiber like sock bits. For our kitchen though, with hardwood floors, it is a great bonus to have it pick up bits from food prep before we get to it days later.

Shark saves itself in Act III…

The Shark Ion RV761 Robot is a nice middle market robot vacuum; Wifi brings it better connectivity options and control, but it lacks some of the advanced navigation technology which of course comes at a much higher cost. But for people with average size homes who want to clean connected rooms, it’s a great option. And let’s face it, that is a sizable majority of the users out there. I still have an Original Roomba and I do mean ORIGINAL; I bought it for my Parents in 2006 and they used it once or twice and then boxed it up. I recently resurrected it and after replacing the battery had it cleaning the living room twice a week all by itself. Well mostly by itself. Even with a lot of floor plan clearing, it tended to need a helping hand to get itself unstuck an awful lot. The Shark on the other hand is a little tank. I think nothing of having it run unattended, even when I am not at home and it cleans every corner and goes back home to its dock without a complaint. And it’s so quiet that I am considering running it at night when I am sleeping. It uses the same ‘bump and go’ method of randomly covering your entire area, but somehow it seems to do so much gentler. Setup via the Shark App was seamless and well documented. I had it connected to Wifi instantly and could control it with the app on my tablet or phone. It responded quickly and would return to the dock with a button press. There’s a scheduler section that’s pretty flexible and makes it simple to set up a routine. But what I was really excited for was the prospect of voice control – I have both Alexa AND Google Assistant in my setup and the idea of being able to get the house to clean itself by a command… well, that’s wow factor right there. And that’s where it seemed to fall apart. The instructions were simple enough for Alexa; add the skill, authenticate the skill with the Shark servers and then the skill was fully enabled. But every time I would open the skill I got the same introductory speech and then “It doesn’t look like your robot is connected…” But it was connected. It was connected on the app, it was connected to my router and I could even ping the address. I would disable and enable the skill, delete and reinstall the robot and it would give the same response. I decided to move on to Google, which was even more of a struggle because first I had to find out how to connect it. Normally, new devices are connected via the Home app – but there is no Shark integration to be found. Through much searching I found that you have to set it up via a Google Assistant integration web page. The address for this is https://assistant.google.com/services/a/uid/00000062cd2aced1 by the way. Once I connected my account to Shark, I thought I was done but when I tried the suggested commands, I got a similar message from my Alexa experience, that there was no robot connected. This went on for a day and then I looked closer at that integration web page and noticed a button marked “Send Link”. I had originally thought this was the typical button you’d see to share a link to the page. It is needed to send a ‘account linking command’ to your older Google devices! I have an original Google Home as well a Google Home Mini. While I also have a Google (Nest) Home hub, this didn’t require the extra step – unfortunately my Hub is in the kitchen and I did all my setup on the older device in the living room. So, it just seems to be the older devices but that’s still a large group of users so I wanted to document it somewhere! I've also included a screen shot of the page so you'll see where to click. Once I did this, I could easily control my robot from Google Assistant. And strangely enough, when I went back and tried on Alexa, it worked fine. Looking at the skill, I noticed that it had be updated a few days ago and that could explain it. The problem with this and the reason I can only give four stars is that there was virtually nothing on this subject on Shark’s support site and it’s a reproducible problem that affects more than a few users. In my searches I found a number of people looking for an answer to this. I think this could have easily been something that should have been in their FAQs at the very least if not explicitly spelled out in their setup instructions for the Google Assistant integration. The number of people using Google Home Minis is staggering so the implications of this should have been addressed. To its credit though, the vacuum is a steady performer and once you get through the setup struggles, it’s a solid performer that’s reliable enough to leave on its own. It includes an interesting take on barrier control as well via an 8-foot-long magnetic strip that’s slightly rounded on top to close off doorways or areas where you don’t want your robot to roam. It can be cut to length (and you can order more strips from their site at a reasonable price) and keeps the robot well confined. I have mine just placed in the archway of my living room and while I am an incredible klutz, I haven’t tripped on it or knocked it out of position at all. You could easily tape it down though and it’s unobtrusive. I’m glad I got the integrations problems solved in Act III of this drama, because while I was truly happy with the performance and build, voice integration was a major selling point for me and the issues I had could be easily resolved if Shark took the time to update their documentation. Pros – Quality Build and Competitively Priced Reliable Independent Performance Quiet and fairly gentle with its surroundings Comes with spare brushes! Cons – Doesn’t Have Advanced Navigation No API, No Integrations With IFTTT Some Procedures Poorly Documented Cumbersome Integration with some Google Assistant devices

Since I was a small child, I have had a dream, err mission, rather, to have my very own robot army. And, let me tell ya, phase one, robot janitorial staff, is nearly complete. The Robot Vacuum R76 does a very good job as a vacuum. It just isn't the brightest robot.... But just because it's a little bit special, doesn't mean it isn't capable at what it does. Compared to the pricier models, this shark does not come with mapping software and it will bump its way right into your heart. It can be a little special. I had it get stuck once or twice during scheduled cleanings, but, for the most part, it did a good job. The kit comes with a charging station, brushes, and magnetic strips to keep your own little R2-D2 in line. The strips work well if your robot is approaching them straight on, but if it turns into them, it can move the strips thus negating their purpose. So, to keep that from happening, you need to keep your strips a foot or so back from whatever object you want the shark to avoid. I wish there had been more strips in the box. As it is, I found myself trying to baby shark proof my two bedroom apartment. Battery life is very good. It ran for nearly 90 minutes on max suck. During my most recent clean, I had the Shark get stuck twice. One time made no sense to me as it seemed to be trying to go somewhere it couldn't go and then found itself off level. Another time, it simply got stuck under the bed. But I have never had it fail to get back to the docking station (assuming it wasn't previously stuck). As a vacuum, I like it. I had to empty the dust bin after each major session. It definitely picks things up. The app on iOS and android works well. The Shark will tell you if it gets stuck or needs assistance. You can set up schedules and tell the shark to return to dock from the app. At the moment, I can't get the Alexa or Google Assistant to recognize the Shark. I'm told that feature will be working properly within the next few weeks. So yeah. My very first robot vacuum and I like it. I just have to remember to baby shark proof my place before the next scheduled session...

    Purposeful 'bump-n-go' style vacuum

Unboxing the SHARK ION Robot Vacuum R76 with Wi-Fi - RV761, its a good looking, sleek robot vacuum, that looks like a lot of other robot vacuums. This is the third robot vacuum I've owned and the third different brand. Out of the box, you get the vacuum, a dock, a power cable, rotating brushes (with spares), a spare filter, and a roll of barrier material. A simple set of instructions make setting up the Shark Ion Robot Vacuum a breeze. Plug the cord into the dock, plug the dock into the wall, clip on the included rotating brushes, place the Robot Vacuum on the dock, power it on with the rocker switch on the side and charge. There's no display on this vacuum aside from the large blue charging lights that glow three blue bars when fully charged and a blue 'WiFi' logo that lights up when connected to your router. Download the Shark app to your phone. Do this first. I initially set the vacuum into pairing mode and by the time the app downloaded, the Robot Vacuum had exited pairing mode, and needed to be initiated again. Press and hold the DOCK and MAX buttons and that sets the vacuum into pairing mode, Go through the instructions on the app and get the vacuum set up. One star is deducted for it's pairing/WiFi capabilities at this time. The vacuum timed out the first time I tried to connect, waiting for the app to download. The vacuum timed out a second time, when trying to pair to my phone. I was about 3ft away from the vacuum and the vacuum was directly above (apx 12ft away from) my router, so connectivity shouldn't have been an issue. Third time, worked for me and I was finally able to get it all set up. I've still had issues trying to register the vacuum through my app tho. It times out and asks me to try again later. Press clean on the top of the vacuum and it will kick into life. First thing I noticed, after owning a few of these style vacuums, is how incredibly quiet it was for such a machine. It's default cleaning mode is 'Normal' which is the 'Mid' level cleaning mode. You have 'Eco' and 'Max' modes as well. The vacuum leaves the dock, turns 180 degrees and then is off. It travels in a straight line in about 20ft increments. If there is a wall or an object in the way, it bounces off of it, turns around and heads off again. If it travels around 20ft and is uninterrupted, it automatically turns and takes another direction. That is about as 'smart' as this vacuum gets. It really is a 'bump-n-go' style vacuum, no onboard camera to track it's route, no smart vacuuming style to make it vacuum in neat rows. And that's ok, this isn't an $800 vacuum, its at a much more attainable price point. I use this vacuum upstairs in my house, and a concern I had was obviously the vacuum diving off the stairs, rolling down them and ending up as trashcan fodder at the bottom. I also wasn't keen on having the boundary roll at the top of the stairs to stop it from careening off the top step, as that would be unsightly and possibly a hazard as you go up and down the stairs. Thankfully the vacuum has very good cliff sensors and I've tested the vacuum successfully several times to make sure it wouldn't plummet to an untimely end. Very happy about that. Using the app, I've set up a schedule for the vacuum to clean the upstairs of the house on both Saturday and Sunday at 10am. Been using it successfully for 3 weekends now and it works very well indeed. Just make sure doors are closed to any rooms you wish to not be entered, or lay down the barrier that is supplied with the vacuum. Either way works very well, deterring the vacuum from entering a room. After approximately 60 mins (as determined by the vacuum) it returns to the dock to recharge. This vacuum DOES NOT have a continuation feature, so if it didn't get the whole area clean before the batteries deplete, it will go back to the dock to charge, but it WILL NOT continue on with it's schedule. Just be aware of that. The suction from the already mentioned, quiet vacuum, is good. Does a great job. It looks sporadic and incomplete as it's going around due to the nature of it's cleaning path, but it does cover all the ground it needs to and gets the job done. You can't sit there and watch it as it'll drive you mad! Let it get on with it's job and go do other things! This vacuum also has voice control via Alexa built in, but I was unable to get it to work at this time. I've used Alexa skills for years, so am no stranger to setting them up. Downloaded the Shark skill to Alexa, linked my Shark account and set forth to voice control my 'Sharkie' as he is now named. The skill opened up in Alexa, but I was told my vacuum couldn't connect. I checked the WiFi signal, checked my connectivity, I disabled and reconnected the Shark skill, still with no luck. I have another robot vacuum that works flawlessly using Alexa voice integration so there had to be a problem with some software. I reached out to Shark Technical Support as directed to by the Shark app, and they confirmed my suspicion that the Robot Vacuum is 'too new' and the Alexa compatibility will be available within the next two weeks or so. I don't see there being an issue in the future with it, as this type of voice integration is very common these days. I'll check that feature out again in a couple of weeks time. Overall, I'm very happy with the vacuum, it does what it says it will, it's not 'fancy', it doesn't have the bells and whistles of other machines, but it doesn't need to. It's not pretending to be something that it's not. And it does what it says it can do, very well! Perfect for setting and leaving to get on with it!

Shark ion 761 Very unhappy with this product and Shark customer service. Only had it ten days and it will only run a few minutes before shutting down for a stuck bumper. It appears the spring is not strong enough to push the bumper back out. Called Shark product support, they witnessed it fail on video. Said they would replace the pod but expect me to pay for shipping, about $25. No thank you. Going to return it to Best Buy and exchange it for some other brand.

Holy frick, I’ve never had one of these, and it’s … just fun to watch, and amusing when it gets stuck. Which is rare. Unboxing was easy, comes with a manual, dock, bot boundary strip (like yellow caution tape for robots) and EXTRA BRUSHES and AN EXTRA FILTER. I thought that was super considerate of them. Set up is very easy. Plug the dock in first, flip the switch on the side of the bot, get your phone out and pair it all up through the ap. Once paired, it shows you the status of the bot, the controls, and a scheduling section to have it run automatically. Once the bot is fully charged, it’s okay to run. Just press clean on the bot or the app, listen to it beep happily, and it’s off and sweeping. The noise level was low, which was a big plus, but it does have a turbo mode to really suck up dust, on carpeting. The stair detection is spot on, as our home has a lot of stairs, so once it’s done with a level, I transport it down and then let set it to clean again. It only got stuck once, and it was our fault, it got tangled up in an extension cord, to which I got a notification on my phone and the unit started beeping out like a sad R2D2. When it was time to dock, 4 out of 5 times, it found the dock without a hitch and connected without a problem. I read up on it’s tracking, and while it appears to go at random, it does get every possible inch, within its power. So, this unit is a good thing for quick spot-sweeps before guests, or to keep things generally clean.

If you have been wanting a robot vacuum you should give this one a try. As soon you open the box you see a big card with easy to follow setup instructions. Inside you will also find the Shark ION ROBOT, side brushes + few extras, battery, charging stand, filter and BotBoundary strip. Once I found a good location to keep the charging dock and charge the vacuum, I was ready to have fun with it. Downloaded the app and again, it was pretty easy to setup and connect to the WiFi. The app will guide you through step by step. You won’t believe how quietly this little vacuum runs. It went smoothly through my carpet to the rug on my living room, and after I was satisfied with my testing, it was time to send it back to the dock. It felt like watching a little puppy going to bed hahaha When I looked the filter I was shocked of how much dust I saw! And believe me, I had clean and vacuumed my apartment just a few days before. This little fella is powerful! On next morning I let it running in my bedroom while I was getting ready. The vacuum had no problems getting under my vanity chair. I thought it would get stuck but somehow it managed to get out. But unfortunately my bed is too low so it didn’t fit under. You might need to use your normal vacuum for the corners, and furniture of course, specially if you have pets, but overall I am loving my little helper!

The Ion Robot Vacuum by Shark is a small self-directed robot vacuum. Its uses Auto-Sense Navigation to learn its way around your floor space. Complete with an app and voice controls through an assistant like Alexa or Google Assistant, it is the next level of robot vacuuming. I found this product helpful to keep my floor cleaner, but it’s not a complete substitution for manually vacuuming. What It Comes With The vacuum comes with the main unit, a charging dock, some extra side brushes, an extra filter, and a roll of BotBoundary material. There’s a very small amount of assembly that requires you to snap on two of the side brushes (very quick and easy). It Has an App This model is equipped for WiFi and has an app. The app is available on both the App Store and Google Play. I tested the Android version, and it worked really well. You can start and stop the vacuum, schedule times and days to run, and even name your robot. There are also voice controls that you can use through Alexa or the Google Assistant. I have not tried those yet. Preparation You do need to prepare the area that the vacuum will be cleaning. You can’t have obstacles in the way if you want it to do its job. I was a little bummed about the prep at first, but really it’s the same if you manually vacuumed your floor, so there’s not really any extra work. Mine worked well with my rugs and over transition strips between rooms. Things like clothes, rug fringe, or shoelaces would probably be a showstopper for this product. The Charging Dock Charging the vacuum is as simple as letting the sensors of the vacuum align with the sensors on the docking station. The vacuum will park itself at the charging dock and charge its battery on its own. Finally, something I don’t have to remember to charge before I use it. The dock is an L-shaped plastic piece that’s intended to sit flat against the wall and plug into a nearby outlet. The only real specific requirements for charging are that the charging dock has required clearances to the front and at both sides. This is so that the vacuum won’t be obstructed getting back to the charging dock when it is finished with its task. The problem that I have with the clearances is that it wants 3 feet to each side of the dock (almost 7 feet in total) and 5 feet in front of the dock to be clear. And you’ll need a wall outlet there too. That’s a lot of floor space, and my house has a lot of stuff along the walls, so this was difficult for me. I’d like to see this clearance requirement reduced a little. Using the Vacuum I started by hitting the Clean button on the top of the vacuum, and then I watched it work for an hour. The Auto-Sense Navigation uses several sensors to learn the area that you are cleaning. It basically picks a direction and goes until it bumps into something. Then it turns and goes in another direction. There doesn’t appear to be a reasoning for its path, but it just keeps going. I was hoping that this would be smarter and have an established pattern. After an hour I noticed that it didn’t always clean completely on the first pass, and it may not make it back to cover it a second time. There were also areas that were missed. The second time I cleaned I tried starting with the app. The app was pretty easy to use, and seemed to have all of the features that I could think of. It ran for an hour, and the floor surfaces did look better. Some of the same areas missed the first time were missed again. The pattern for cleaning didn’t really adapt to be more efficient. At the 30-minute mark the vacuum got stuck between a chair and a child’s toy. I told it to return to the dock, and it spent 30 minutes trying to go back to the charging dock. All said and done it ran for an hour, and the dust bin was full, so it did help. Also to note, I ran the vacuum while our toddler was upstairs sleeping, so the vacuum isn’t extremely loud. If you’re in the room you’ll hear it, but you can still watch TV or talk. Disposing of waste Sorry, the vacuum hasn’t learned how to empty itself yet so you’ll still need to do this part. It accumulates everything in the detachable dust bin. The dust bin is pretty small, so I’d recommend emptying it out after each use. You should also tap the dust off of the filter. Be careful when emptying the dust bin as the back side is open and the dirt can fall out. I learned the hard way on that one. Here is a quick list of Pros and Cons. Pros *Anything that helps me clean is a plus. *Has a way to schedule the cleaning. *Has an app which previous versions did not. *Have added voice controls for Alexa and Goggle Assistant. *Recharges itself on its charging dock. *Sound is not very loud while cleaning. *Has a manual button to start or dock on the top if nearby. Cons *Have to be careful that is doesn’t roll over many things – cords, toys, clothes, etc. *Not a lot of BotBoundary strips. Would like to see more in the package. *Suction doesn’t pick up everything on the first pass. *Vacuum pattern is spastic and unpredictable. *Misses parts of the area that it should be cleaning *Sometimes gets stuck for minutes in corners *Takes a while to find the base sometimes. *Base requires a lot of clearance around it per the instructions. *Small dust bin capacity (though understandable due to the robot’s size). I’m giving the Shark ION Robot 3 stars. It does seem to help pick up debris on the floor. I like the fact that it can charge itself, has an app to run it, and isn’t really loud. However, it’s not extremely reliable to clean every part of the floor, sometimes it gets stuck, and you still need to watch what it’s doing. I think that this product is helpful to keep things cleaner, but it is no substitute for a manual cleaning with a normal vacuum. This is a good supplementary cleaning product that could help keep the floors cleaner until you can tend to it yourself.
