I Like ASUS
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This 2 in 1 is my first laptop of 5 owned of various brands ASUS, HP, Dell. The versatility of a flip-keyboard and screen is a big benefit. I find it useful in bed to watch a show for example. To half size the fairly heavy laptop, fold it over for touchscreen operation, this is great. Boot-up time for Windows 10 is T-Minus 10 seconds. Screen image quality is as expected. Only concern is for the full charge to drain time when used with DVD-ROM usage on battery power. (Normal ?). Also the back-light keyboard is hard for me to see in dim light conditions. I need to have my reading glasses and find the key lights hard to differentiate with the special characters. Otherwise I love my new laptop. Clean lines with the brushed aluminum a finish that is classy.

Broken at 13 Months
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this laptop computer because my last one physically gave out. My young son would constantly carry the last one by the screen, and he almost ripped it into two pieces. The rotating hinge on this ASUS laptop seemed to be the most sturdiest one at the store. But even though my son has moved on to Xbox and WiiU, and rarely touches this machine anymore, I now have another laptop with hinge issues. There is a crack in the plastic case on the right side which appears to only get worse if not addressed. If it were my son't fault, or if I had heavy use on this machine, I would say so. But I use this machine about an hour a day. I'm going to look into the warranty, and I'll try to remember to let you know how that goes. I hope it wasn't a one year warranty. I'd like to share a few other comments. Start up is excruciatingly slow. I don't know whether to blame the machine, Windows 10 or my lack of ambition to fix the problem. But when I turn it on for the first time, I wait several minutes before I can use it. I may be spoiled at this point, but I'm still annoyed daily by it. Also soon after start-up, apps just close if they are too tired to run. The other thing that I am surprised about is the broken English I find in the ASUS materials. I may sound like an entitled US citizen, but in this day and age I find it surprising that they don't either have anyone with a full grasp of the English language or someone they could hire to proofread. But, on a positive note, I have never had any system issues. It was easy to network and runs reliably when it is ready to do so.

Excellent choice, excellent performance!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've had a Toshiba Satellite for at least 4 years but it's now worn out of so much use mainly in terms of performance so I decided to buy a new laptop for my remaining 2-3 years in the university and a Masters. I was looking for a new laptop with overall excellent performance and features for the foreseeable lifespan I need it and what I will need it for; not only Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. But also for more demanding Engineering programs such as Matlab, modelling programs and simulators. So far I'm very happy with the laptop's speed, it's i7 processor allows very fast processing, it's incredibly fast. The graphic card allows for a nice HD playback and a smooth running of programs, the audio is very good and the screen display is excellent as well. I love the functionality of a full keyboard nicely distributed and of course the screen size. It's a very nice feature the touchscreen as a 2-in-1 device. Also the lit keyboard is a very nice feature. The built-in Windows 10 OS is an excellent added feature and always runs smooth. It would have been excellent if Office was integrated. Nevertheless as it is out of the box it's ready-to-go. It's a great option at this price range. You do get a lot. Specially because I got a $250 discount (A special offer and student discounts). I would highly recommend this laptop to someone who will need high specs for more than just Office applications and internet surfing and enjoys having a high performance device able to have HD playback for multimedia. Only thing that would make this better would be a Blu-ray disk drive. I'm very satisfied with this laptop from Asus. It's an amazing computer.

Great Laptop
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I needed a laptop to use primarily for college work but also for personal use (surfing the web, listening to music, etc.). Looked at many brands, including boutique. If you consider yourself any kind of power user then you will probably drool over the higher end offerings from Sager, Xotic, Alienware, MSI, Gigabyte, Razer . . . and . . . while it would be nice, these are typically approaching a couple of thousand bucks or more (a couple of years ago I ended up with an ASUS ROG that is a beast, but also a huge heavy tank with short battery life). This time I needed something portable yet powerful and the Asus Q551LB answered the call for around $900 (minus some rewards money I cashed in). Mine is a lightweight, slim, and attractive black (fingerprint magnet) with a nice polished silver metallic bevel around the edge (matches my Note 4), Intel I7, runs W10 preinstalled (like it more than I thought I would, though it does annoyingly lack simple access to basic system information -> learning curve), has a touchscreen (didn't want originally but love it now), 8 G RAM, 1 TB drive (for another $350+ consider springing for an SSD; the HD is obviously slower and makes mechanical drive sounds when running - usually not that audible), DVD optical drive (uncommon these days), built-in battery - excellent battery life (I get 5-6 hours with moderate web surfing and music), decent sounding internal speakers w/ additional external sub (realistically no-one expects their laptop to rock the house through internal speakers, but these are adequately audible and quite improved with the sub - quite loud enough to play music at my desk at work and to actually hear the dialogue from video even w/o the sub), can be used as a 2-in-1 (not a big deal for me though tablet mode is excellent for full-screen viewing), the full HD 1920x1080 display is quite beautiful (sure 4K would be nicer - think price point), the keyboard has white backlighting on silver chicklet keys (turning it off actually improves visibility of the black key characters at times), it vents out the back (under the hinge) - don't care for laptop gaming and have not used it for that (prefer the ROG w/ W7, or desktop, or XBox) and my guess would be that it would get hot, Nvidia GeForce 940M dedicated graphics (not bad for $900 bucks people), the multi-gesture touchpad is smooth and responsive (flat built-in button type), 3 USB (3.0 incl charge), 1 x HDMI, Bluetooth, WIFI/WLAN, external monitor capable . . . Probably left some things out of this review . . . and . . . bottom line = this is an excellent computer for under $1k. I am pleased with my purchase. Thanks Best Buy (and Quac at the Tiffany Springs store). I'm out . . .

Nice PC for power user
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Laptop review by a power user. 1) Network connection: I use my laptop in wireless mode while traveling. At home I connect it to my LAN. a) I found that you can use the LAN connection and a Wireless connection at the same time. b) My router is wireless N, I have not tested the laptop on a wireless AC network. c) I have a media server attached to my router. The laptop connected to it with no problems. d) I have a NAS (WD EX2) connected in my router. The only problem is that the protected section of this drive will not let me logon from multiple PC's at the same time. This is a network problem, not a problem with the laptop. 2) Display options: I have used the laptop in multiple modes. a) laptop only b) laptop and a HDMI monitor in both clone and extended desktop. c) laptop, HDMI monitor, and a 3rd monitor (via WiDi) in an extended desktop d) when using the WiDi it gave me options to assign the WiDi monitor as: Clone monitor 1, Clone monitor 2, or extended desktop as monitor 3 3) Sound: I found one problem but it was correctable via Windows Settings. I have a HDMI monitor (w/o speakers) however when I plugged in the monitor it assumed that it was a HDMI TV (with speakers) so my audio went away. I had to go into the audio setting and tell it that my default speaker location was the laptop. Problem solved. a) the external jack is for a microphone/headset combination. I have tested it with a set of headphones only. 4) WiDi connection: For my test is ran a NetFlix movie (video) on monitor 3 via WiDi, with the audio from the laptop. I did not find any delays in the sync of audio and video. The WiDi connection is from my laptop to TV (not thru my router). 5) DVD: The computer has an installed DVD. I have used it to install some programs. I have also played an Audio CD. Windows 10 does not come with a DVD player software, but software can be purchased. If you had Media Player on Windows 7 or 8 the upgrade is free. 6) Printer: My printer is an HP 8620. I am directly printing to the printer (by WiFi) without passing it thru the router. 7) Windows 10: My precious laptop was Vista 32 bit. I am happy with the operation of Windows 10. a)The only problem I have noted is that some internet sites I visited are not yet compatible with the Microsoft Edge of Windows 10, as a workaround I am able to used Internet Explorer 11 accessible in the start menu. 8) problems that I did encounter that are related to my setup (not the PC). a) In expended display mode 'only' the laptop has touch screen, external monitor do not have touch screen b) When multiple monitors are used the 'Tablet Mode' is not available. If used with laptop monitor only the 'Tablet Mode' is optional

Smart choice
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I walked into Best Buy wanting the Surface Pro 3, but I walked about with the Asus 2-in-1 instead. I can use it anywhere, anytime without having the feeling that it's going to fall out of my lap because the screen is awkward. I can fold it up and use it as a tablet or I can sit at a table/desk and use it like a computer. The touch screen is amazing. There is zero lag. Documents/photos/music transfer extremely fast from old laptop. If you want something for work & personal use, get this 2-in-1. There is insane amounts of storage and Windows 10 is really easy to use. Highly recommend!

Great all around laptop
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this computer to replace an older, out of date laptop. It has excelent speed and is great for multi-tasking. The touch screen is very nice feature that makes it easy to transition between different tasks. The abitity to transform it to a tablet makes it very versatile and fun to use. I would recommend this 2-in-1 and would most definitely purchase again.

Q: QuestionIs this laptop capable of reading CD-R and CD-RW discs?I noticed that in the specifications the Optical Drive Type was a DVD-RW. I was just wondering if the disc drive could read regular CD discs (music and games) as well as the capability to use CD-R and CD-RW discs? Thank you very much.
Asked by statguy76.
- A:Answer Yes. Any time you see a current drive that says it a DVD-RW drive, it should be able to read any type of CD or DVD (CD, CD-R, DVD, DVD+/-R, DVD+/-RW), with the exception of Blu-Ray or other high definition video type discs. If you want Blu-Ray, make sure you see that it says that it is supported specifically.

Q: QuestionIs the Hard Drive loud?I recently bought an HP laptop with similar specs, but unfortunately the hard drive is making an annoying sound, and the guys at geek squad said that the sound is normal, and it depends on the model of the laptop for the sound of the hard drive to be different. So basically I was wondering...is the hard drive with this laptop noisy? For instance, does it make a screechy noise that's very noticeable. I find the hard drive noise to be rather odd because my old HP laptop didn't make a noise like that. A ton of people have recommended Asus to me, so that is why I'm interested in this laptop. Thanks to anyone that can help! P.S. Here's the HP laptop that I bought- http://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-envy-2-in-1-15-6-touch-screen-laptop-intel-core-i7-12gb-memory-1tb-hard-drive-natural-silver-black/3008123.p?id=1219567192721&skuId=3008123
Asked by Dust Bunny.
- A:Answer No, the laptop is super quiet, even when I'm pushing it hard while gaming or streaming. There's no noticeable noise at all - a few times I've thought it turned itself off, actually, but the screen had just gone off, the laptop was still on.

Q: QuestionOptional RAM Upgrade?I very much like the specs for this computer, as I'm interested in it for my College school work, but I Was wondering if the RAM was upgradeable, and if so is that a service that can be purchased and done for me? I'd prefer 16GB RAM personally
Asked by Brandon.
- A:Answer It can have a maximum of 12gb of ram installed according to the specs, and it already has the expansion bay for it.

Q: QuestionDoes anyone have a problem seeing the keyboard letters? Mine just look like silver buttons.
Asked by Anonymous.
- A:Answer If you hit the fn+f4 key, that should turn on the key back lighting. Hitting fn+f3, will turn it down, then off. Hitting either combo will go through the 4 steps - off, low, middle, high. Hope that works for you!

Q: QuestionAre these speakers easy to hear

- A:Answer The speakers that are built in are pretty loud and when you plug in the provided sub, it is overwhelmingly loud!!

Q: QuestionIs installing an SSD easy?Has anyone opened it up and installed an SSD? Was it an easy process? Is the size 2.5 inches? Thanks! I want to upgrade from the HDD to an SSD.
Asked by Anonymous.
- A:Answer It was relatively easy. Opening the case is very easy - take out all the screws and pop off the back cover revealing everything. There are helpful youtube videos that show this. There are no extra bays so you will need to do the clone with an external cable or by using a DVD replacement hard drive bay. I bought a Samsung EVO 512 GB SSD and their software would not clone it on Windows 10. I ended up buying Acronis TrueImage (need version 16) and it was quick and easy. The SSD made it super fast! I believe it was a 2.5" 9mm drive.
