    Epson V550 Scanner

I needed a scanner that is reliable, consistent, and easy to operate, which was also a concern. I chose the Epson V550 after doing research on several brands, and, yes, the reviews were very helpful. I bought this scanner, because of high reviews, Good price, and Epson makes good products for photographers. (ie. I own an Epson Artisan 1430 printer) and they make them to last. I opened the box, read the start-up guide and was scanning negatives in 15 minutes. This scanner also does 35mm,120 film, both negatives and slides. It will also produce image to image, and you can make the files small, or large files depending on your final output. I would recommend this scanner to any photographer who shot film and slides for years, then went ditigal, and would like to include his film works into his current portfolio. I am very happy with this Epson V550 scanner.

    Great for scanning film!

I was searching for a scanner that would efficiently scan my 35mm film so I wouldn't have to pay the lab to do it. This scanner does a great job, however my only wish is that the 35mm template was full sized and not only half the scanner, I would be able to scan twice the amount of film at a time but it works great. I also received the scanner with a large hole in the box and it definitely looked like it had been dropped, I'm not sure if that is how it was sent or if it happened in transit. Overall a great scanner, from what I read it does basically the same as the v600 for a bit less!

I have a LOT of old slides and negatives, and some photos for which the negatives have been lost, and I wanted to digitize all of this. I looked at what was available and read a ton of product reviews and there seemed to be a choice of either cheapie low quality "toys" with poor resolution, or else professional -oriented products at upwards of $1000. And then I saw the Epson V550 and V600. Priced in the lower-middle of this range, they advertise as good a scanning resolution as all but one very expensive product. I checked these out and found that the V550 is the same machine as the V600 --they differ only in that more photo processing software is included with the 600. SInce I already have a photo post-processing app, this didn't matter and I went with the 550. I got lucky ---it was on sale, AND I had a Best Buy percentage-off coupon for which --amazingly-- this product actually *wasn't* on the (always hideously long) list of exclusions!! But I still had to check out the important thing -- did it really work as claimed? I tested it with some 35MM slides first; it took me a minute to figure out how to insert the slide attachment tray, the instructions for the scanner really could have been written better --but I figured it out, and then tried a few scans. Went thru different resolution settings, etc, and found that at 600DPI or above, it does a pretty good job!! 1200dpi seems best for slides, but the scanning process was VERY slow...so I did most of them at 600, and really couldn't see a difference except when the photo was "blown up" to full screen. Color reproduction was good; there is a "color restorer" function in the V550 software, but since I have another photo app I prefer to use, I did not use it. The included slide scanning attachment holds 4 slides at a time; given the size of the scanner, I felt they could have designed it to do more than 4, but it was really no big deal since each individual slide takes a fixed amount of time to scan which depends only on the dpi resolution setting you use. Next I tried 35MM negatives. The attachment tray for these holds 2 strips (of up to 5 or 6 exposures each). It has a snap-in "frame" that is supposed to hold the negatives flat for scanning, even if they have become curled; in fact it did a pretty fair job with this, if not absolutely perfect. It is just a bit "fiddly" to place the strips of negatives into the tray, but again, it wasn't a big deal. Once again, I ended up using 600dpi resolution for many of them, going up to 1200 for only a few particular pictures that had a lot of detail or ones I especially intend to make big prints of.. Overall, it is a good product and if you find a sale, it is a real bargain for what you get! --and it will also do all the "usual" scanning stuff such as documents, too, since it is a full size unit. On the "con" side, it is rather large and bulky, and the instructions really could have been written better ---but I found there are reviews by serious photo enthusiasts which included useful setup information! It is very slow if used at high resolution --but it will do a good job for those photos you really want to preserve as well as possible. Also, especially with transparencies, you must be careful to keep both the scanner and your slides/negatives clean. I kept a can of that pressurized air spray stuff handy; otherwise every tiny speck of dust will appear as hairs and spots on the scanned photo. As far as I know, this is a problem regardless of which product you buy, so the Epson is probably no worse than any other here. (There is a dust removing feature in the software, but of course any app like this will have *some* effect on your photo content; it is better to just keep really careful with cleaning!) To sum up --this scanner is a good value for the money!

    Great for slide scanning

I purchased this scanner mainly for photo and slide scanning. I have tons of slides, some very old that I need in digital form. I have had zero problems getting good images from some very old (even glass and metal mount) slides. Since I have so many I wish I could do more than 4 at one time, but that is OK. The only problem I have had and it may be reacted to my specific computer and software and that is the software (I think it's the driver really) gets lost after being used for a number of times in a row. To get things running smoothly again requires me to turn off the scanner, remove the USB cable, reinsert the cable and start the scanning software again. Minor problem, compared to some software issues I have had over the years.

    Good Artist Scanner

I bought this scanner thinking that it was a lot bigger. The box was terribly misleading. Maybe I misunderstood when it read "scan sharp images up to 17"x22" but it barely holds 9"x11." I was so upset when I got home I almost just returned it. I'm mad about it just now thinking about it - and I bought it like a month ago. But I'm a professional artist and this scanner does the job. The image quality is great. It scans quickly. Good color. I genuinely like it. Epson is a good brand, and this is a good scanner. Also the guy who sold it to me was very nice, polite, and helpful.

Does a Very Good Job of Digitizing Old Slides

I bought this to digitize several hundred old slides that are 30-40 years old. This is the first time I'm doing this, so I have nothing to compare it to. But it suits my purposes just fine. There's a "color restoration" option that works really well. It just seems to take several minutes to digitize 4 slides. But I use that time to clean and prep the next 4 slides. It also does crop a small area along the sides of the slides. So far that hasn't been an issue for me. I did use the DIGITAL ICE technology, but that seemed slower yet, but yielded good results. Although some of my slides are in pretty bad shape, and even ICE couldn't get rid of all dirt. So I'm cleaning those with film cleaner before digitizing. I can't speak to other features of the scanner, as I'm just using it for slides. But I'm very happy with the results and would probably give it 4 1/2 stars. For the price, I'm very satisfied and would recommend it to anyone who wants to preserve old slides.

This was a replacement for an equivalent Epson scanner that was about 10 years old. I was hoping that they had improved things enough with respect to the speed of processing because I have a couple of thousand slides and negatives to scan. What I found was that the quality was outstanding, but the time it took to process just a small quantity of slides was very long. When I projected what it would take to scan all my slides/negatives it worked out to a full-time job for quite some time, so I returned it to Best Buy.

Bought the Epson V550 to scan photos & film negatives. Scan quality appears to be very good for a flatbed scanner within this price range. I wish it came with Photoshop Elements for photo editing & it only has Digital Ice for film scanning. Overall have been happy with it so far & some scans have turned out better than the original. Like that you can also easily upload scans to Email or Facebook.

I'm compiling our family photos and so far I've scanned both prints and negatives using this scanner. The scans are nearly the same quality as the original photos. The scanner is a little slow (especially with negatives), but to speed up the process I scan multiple pictures at once according to theme/event. I plane to use the snipping tool if I ever need to print or use them individually. I've scanned both35mm negatives and from some old 110 cameras. The 110 negatives take some maneuvering. The one problem I'm having, is figuring out the correct way to seat the negatives for the proper orientation. The "shiny side" isn't always apparent to me, but I guess that's more of a user issue. I haven't used any of the advanced features yet, but there are some older photos that need correction, so I imagine that I will soon.

I bought this scanner to digitize about 1000 photographic slides that my father and grandfather took from the 1930's through the 1960's. It scans 4 at a time in a special frame (included with the scanner). The software that comes with the scanner has various capabilities to correct for faded colors, backlighting, under- and over-exposure, and scratches/dust on the slides. You can also set the parameters for the pixels of the digital scan to get very high quality, or lower quality if that's all you need. It's exactly what I was looking for. I'm about halfway through the 1000 slides and everything is going well with good results. I've also scanned a few dozen photos and am very happy with the results of those too. I wish the frame for the slides held more than 4 slides and that the scanner worked more quickly, but I have no issues with the resulting digital scans.

We are trying to copy s large number of my 95-year-old father-in-law's slides. My dedicated slide scanner stopped working and this looked like a reasonably-priced alternative to purchase of another slide scanner. It takes up much more real estate in my home office and is not particularly fast, but it does the job.

A replacement for my EPSON V500

My previous EPSON Perfection V500 just up and died suddenly after only a few years of light use, so I wanted a replacement photo scanner with similar features and pricing. The EPSON V550 seemed to be the go-to scanner in the marketplace for home/small office use based on reviews. Plus, Best Buy offered a sale discount of $20 and a price match discount of $14. The V550 differs from the V500 in the way you load film and photos onto the scanning glass, using a plastic frame that snaps into the lid rather than a frame that rests on the glass directly. Also, the feature to scan documents into word-searchable images seems to be part of the separate but included ABBYY software (v9.0), rather than an checkbox option within the EPSON SCAN software that used ABBYY (v6.0) during scanning. Otherwise, the software and user interface operate just like the V500. After removing the previous EPSON V500 software I installed the V550 without issue on a Windows 7 PC. I checked the EPSON support website and noticed a number of software version updates available for download, possibly to support Windows 10.

I haven't had a chance to scan photos or negatives yet. The slides I scanned turned out good. The scanner is easy to use, but a little slow. My last scanner was an Epson and I loved it. Unfortunately, it would not work with my current laptop. I am expecting this one to be equally satisfactory.

I have found it to be easy to use, and I am happy with the results. I would recommend this scanner over a multifunction printer that requires ink even when only wanting a scanner.

We purchased this scanner because it has high enough resolution to capture old family photos, and digitize them for ease of future viewing. Right now, my wife is diligently converting boxes of photos and making albums- The best part, we can throw out the originals - The scanner sets up instantly and is easy to use - Images are great - We do need a back up portable hard drive (or a cloud back up) to protect our work - checking on those options now.

Have been using this to scan in some old photo albums that I've had to my computer to preserve the memories. No problems thus far. Few minor software hiccups but that could happen to anything. Decent speed and options. Easy to set up, easy to use. Scanner high pitched noise gets on my nerves after a while (sensitive hearing), but most if not all scanners have this so no blame on this particular scanner. Haven't used the negative slide portion but it doesn't look like it'd be too difficult to use as well. Can also scan documents and other things to a PDF file so will be getting my file cabinet a little less messy. Would recommend this scanner to anyone.

Product is excellent however the instructions and manuals are awful. Trouble shooting guide is nearly worthless. Software with product was out of date and scanner would not work. No auto up date or even instructions to do it manually. Had issues with product with updated software sometimes not working apparently because I had an all in on product connected to pc. Tech support was not clear on cause since I was able to get it to work without disconnecting the other scan product. User manuals almost no help.
