Q: QuestionHELP! I have a 2013 MacBook Pro & bought a Belkin thunderbolt 3 docking station. Is there any way to connect the two? Is there such a thing as a female thunderbolt 3 adapter, so I can use newer docks with an older workhorse MacBook Pro?

• A:Answer Yes. Use a Thunderbolt/Thunderbolt 2 cable from the MacBook Pro and attach a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter on the other end. Then plug the Thunderbolt 3 side of the adapter into the Belkin Thunderbolt 3 docking station.

Q: QuestionDoes this adapter maintain the same speeds as the Thunderbolt 3? I know the connections are the same as USB-C, but the speeds of Thunderbolt 3 have a much higher threshold than USB-C. Similar to the differences in USB-1 or USB-3.0 speeds.

• A:Answer I'm using it to import video from a 16 year old Canon Digital (digital tape) camera. The camera was firewire, but the adapter works fine, and iMovie recognizes the camera and even controls the rewind, fast forward and playback speeds. I'm also using the camera as a "pass-through" to import VHS data to my iMac. But I'm not sure about the throughput. I would contact Apple for the exact specs for your question.

Their website proposes an alternative solution that involves using a powered dock, but they don’t guarantee proper performance. I went ahead and shelled out the extra $300 for the twin. • A:Answer How could it? It does not even have a USB Port on either side of the adapter. This is Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 1 and 2 which uses a USB-C TB3 on the side that connects to the computer and Thunderbolt 1/2 which uses a Mini Displayport connector on the end that connects to the device. It will not even operate on the regular Macbook since it does not have Thunderbolt at all, only USB-C. Same port different technology. It is ONLY for adapting the new version of Thunderbolt to the older versions of Thunderbolt. I bought the Apple Superdrive back in 2008 when the first Macbook Air came out and I found that it would ONLY connect directly to a Type-A port on a Mac that did not ship with an internal Superdrive. It was not even a power issue. It is all software limited. I tried combining 3 USB ports together (2 for power one for data) and it still would not work. I am afraid you either need to give up your ancient technology or buy a third party DVD Burner as Apple left optical drives in the dust long ago. Remember Apple is a forward thinking company so if you want to use old technology with the latest and greatest Apple's you need to be forward thinking as well.

• A:Answer No, you need a mini-display port cable, instead. It has the same physical connector but transmits an entirely different signal. You would need an adapter that converts USB-C to mini-display port, too. See if that monitor supports mini-display port in the first place. PC’s do not support Thunderbolt. Apple uses USB-C connectors to transmit Thunderbolt 3 signals but this is solely for their products.
