Q: QuestionI'm a little confused. The Insignia 300 sq. ft. unit says the condensation evaporates automatically but the 350 sq. ft. unit says it has to be manually drained. Is this correct and if so why the difference?

• A:Answer I'm a fairly new owner of this unit so I don't consider myself an expert... but, as I understand it, there are two water collection systems linked to different functions. When running the unit in air conditioner mode, a smaller amount of water is collected in the bottom pan of the unit. Natural evaporation, aided by some of the warmth and air movement generated by the running unit, would normally take care of that water collection... unless one happened to be in an EXTREMELY humid environment. In that case, it is possible to drain that pan. The second collection area is linked to the dehumidifier function of the unit, which one can choose to run. Since the purpose of that function is specifically to remove moisture from the air, it collects more water in the upper chamber, which would need to be drained on a regular basis. Note that there is a standard bushing to accept a short length of hose for the purpose of draining... not a removable collection container. I drain mine into a bucket with a short length of hose, though you could roll it to a floor drain or roll it to an outside door and use the hose to drain the water into the lawn.

Q: QuestionDoes this unit have a water resivour that must be emptied periodically, or is it self evaporating? If so does it have the option to attach a hose to the back to vent the water runoff?

• A:Answer It does have a water reservoir that will need to be emptied periodically. It beeps 8 times then P1 appears in the control panel. They do provide a very short hose that could be used for that purpose, however it might be easier to lift it onto the side of a tub to empty it out. Either way the water basin will need to be manually drained.

• A:Answer It does. As far as I know all real room air conditioners do. An evaporative air cooling unit does not require an exhaust hose but that type of unit does not work as well as a dehumidifying unit. They use cold water, ice, or frozen packs to cool the air, hence adding humidity rather than lowering. The unit I got from Best Buy works well, is pretty quiet, and did come with a few different configurations to connect the exhaust to a nearby window. It was simple to install. I hope that helps.

• A:Answer This unit appears to operate fine on carpeted floors. I have not noticed any overheating issues. We have a low pile carpet that it sits on in our bedroom overnight. I believe the AC unit itself sits in the middle of the machine because the drain plug for the condensation is located in the middle. It is also lower in noise than our older unit.

• A:Answer The description says that it does, but I don't know for sure as I have the drain connected to a clear plastic hose draining into a 5 gallon bucket. On a humid day, it pulls a lot of water out of the air... over 5 gallons in 8 to 10 hours, so I think it would stop often if I didn't have the hose. I got the hose (need a 5/8 inch ID hose), and a hose clamp for under $ 10 at Lowes
